So true!! I've been stiffed by "devout" Christians and the well off in business matters. Hard working people save up their money for the contractor to get the work done. I always ask for at least half up front when dealing with Godly or Moneyed men....
I always ask for half up front in general, and if they kill the job midway, I keep it. It's right there in my contract. It only makes sense, especially if you've gone to some expense in the service of the gig.
You are right to include the well-off in your assessment of those most likely to stiff you. And they do it with an attitude of entitlement that is infuriating. Be strong, comrade!
When I first got out of the Navy I took a short gig as "distributor" of a regional paper in a small town. Basically it was a 600 customer paper route. When collection time came around I dreaded the homes with the manicured lawn and a luxury car in the driveway. Getting $2.50 cash (or a check that didn't bounce) was like pulling teeth. The unpainted shack with a beater car in the driveway woulds have the money all ready and waiting for me.
It is terrible that they are racist but the question is would they refuse service to a customer who calls from that zip code? Cold calling is marketing, and companies look at demographics in deciding where to spend their limited marketing dollars. I'm 53 and outside of the coveted 18-44 year old demographic. Nobody is spending money trying to sell me clothes and fun stuff. I get it. I don't like that I'm yesterday's news but marketers have to target correctly.
The news station actually tested the racist system, by having a black Montbello resident, name of Pam Jiner, try to get an appointment with her own zip code. She did not get booked. But when she said she lived in another neighborhood, amazingly, she was booked right away!
So, yeah, they would refuse service to a customer who calls from that zip code.

Earl, is that you?
What an i interesting case study that must have been for you. It seems to be SOP.
I mean, come on, people! We have a black president! Racism is over!
I wondered if this affiliate was in for a budget cut...
I call shenanigans. Thomas hasn't said a word in over a decade.
That and their refrigerators - imagine the riches!!
What about their First Amendment right to do whatever the fuck they want?

Yet more proof that still don't live in a "post racial" America, despite having a black president.
A littler too "white -friendly"
Sorry that only works birth birth control. That's why Hobby Lobby's able to do it.
Hopefully they'll either change their ways or go out of business before they have time to put one up.
