Durr. You're right of course -- if the airflow from the two fans were balancing each other out to to prevent horizontal motion, it would also cancel out the airflow required for lift. So yeah, there's probably a thread keeping it from getting too far from the forward fan, and the rear fan is probably reversed, so both fans can look like they're running, but are actually blowing in the same direction.
