He is an experienced, veteran, professional politician. He understands how to lead a campaign and get elected to things. He has a long history of relationships and connections with many Democrats all over the state. What's-his-name was not that. He was an advocate for his point of view but was naive and he did not have the savvy to run and win. In retrospect, the contrast is startling.
