Firewerks incoming....

The Missouri Supreme Court ordered Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins to appear in person Thursday and explain why he should not be held in contempt for directing election officials to use a congressional map the court has barred him from implementing.

In the unusual late order Tuesday, the court gave Hoskins until noon Wednesday to answer a motion for contempt from People Not Politicians, a political action committee that forced a referendum on a map gerrymandered in 2025 to favor Republicans. The court scheduled an in-person hearing for 10 a.m. Thursday.

The contempt fight erupted hours after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh rejected Missouri officials’ emergency request to stay the state court ruling. Minutes later, Chief U.S. District Judge Stephen Clark of the Eastern District of Missouri issued a temporary restraining order barring Hoskins from using any congressional map other than the 2025 version.

I was a big fan of the OG Star Trek. When I was in engineering school, it was one of the favorite shows on the tv in the student house (by that time, in re-runs). It's a crime it was cancelled after three seasons, while a lot of dreck remained on the air. I confess that I did not follow hardly any of the other later Trek series, although I did see quite a few of the films.

Rick Scott: "Nobody likes higher gas prices, but nobody wants to be killed by a nuclear weapon. That's what's at stake here. Do we want to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon?"

Bitter Scribe's avatar

Do they realize that was the exact same line used to justify the Iraq war?

“Come on kid eat your peas”

“I don’t wanna”

“Do we want to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon?

Well?”

Marlon Rando's avatar

Yes Rick, I want to be killed by a nuclear weapon.

What an idiot with his flawed proposition.

(that's scare is long out of the consciousness of most Americans)

Ridiculous.

There is no nuclear threat from anyone other than our own insane President.

Where is the pushback from the media? it gets worse every day.

TOS is a better show than TNG in basically every way. Not more having a space god there to tell you how special and wonderful the crew is alone makes it the better series.

MRK's avatar

That is an interpretation of Q I haven't seen before.

Napoleon's avatar

Like he's antagonistic but it's always a teaching moment for Picard.

MRK's avatar

That's not the same as telling them they're special and wonderful, but OK.

Left TOS behind and moved onto what I consider a mandatory TNG watch for any Trek anniversary.

Not the first Trek two-partner, but arguably the most consequential and most important. TNG Season 3, Episode 26 and Season 4, Episode 1 - THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.

Buffalo Springfield bassist Bruce Palmer was born on this day in 1946. Here they are with Neil Young's "Broken Arrow" off their Buffalo Springfield Again album:

And here's the long version of "Bluebird" off a 2-record compilation that was released in 1973 well after the band had broken up:

Something I have put out there, a big part of how I got into TOS Star Trek was the 1960s-70s James Blish " adaptations" in the school libraries. I now know that the author didn't watch the show, took substantial liberties with scripts that were already often outdated, and finally farmed out most of the writing to others. There are still episodes where I would take the Blish version over what was aired.

$55 for the spoon rest. $35 for a mug.

Fuck, I am SO in the wrong line of work.

The fact that there are actual, gainfully employed humans who will pay those prices is what's astounding.
