OT but goddamn

I am an admin on our local FB page that doesnt allow MAGA/science deniers etc. We have just been alerted to the fact that a large land owning family in town is having a 70 foot light up cross built on their land at the TOP of Tumwater Mountain. It will be visible for fucking miles and will totally disrupt the wildlife/birds etc along with the whole bloody town. It seems they have done this without permits because they own the land and think they can do what they want.

We allowed the original post telling people about it but it devolved into a mini religious war and they didnt provide proof. We now have the proof and are publishing it. The guy building it is a born again christian and really fervent with it This is going to cause mayhem but I and many others are going to do everything we can to stop this

Sudbury is not only famous for its swanky Holiday Inn -- the area has a remarkable geological and scientific history.

The town is at the site of one of the largest asteroid impact features, from an impact 1.8 billion years ago; the crater filled up with mineral-rich magma, which is extremely valuable. Some of deposits are very deep, so the mineshafts go down well over a mile.

Enter the neutrino -- a 'ghostly' particle produced by many nuclear reactions, including those that power the sun. Neutrinos barely interact with matter, so nearly all of them stream out of the sun unimpeded, and nearly all of the neutrinos that hit the earth go right through without stopping.

But occasionally, one will stop -- they carry substantial energy, so that if they DO stop and dump their energy, they're easy to detect. The problem is, we're also being continuously bombarded by cosmic rays, mostly protons and such that are moving super-fast and carrying high energies. These create a continuous shower of high-speed particles everywhere on earth -- the background radiation we can't do anything about. Cosmic-ray hits completely swamp the tiny number of neutrino detections.

But a mile or so of rock will filter all of these out, leaving only neutrinos. So Sudbury was a great place to build a neutrino detector. This has run for quite a while, and the data from the Sudbury detector has resolved some long-standing issues around solar neutrinos.

An ancient asteroid impact set the stage for understanding the sun. I find that breathtakingly cool.
