Ever hear the story of that Vermont judge whose name I forgot who had the case of a runaway slave brought before him, and the agent of the 'owner' was there getting the certificate allowing him to take the man back south. He showed the ownership paper to the judge and the judge said, "how do I know your client owns this man?" And the agent is indignant and says, "Judge here is the man, and here is the paper that says he's the property of my client. You've seen this and what more do you expect?" The judge said "A bill of sale from the Almighty." That's truly what he said. And the man did not get his permission. You can google this transaction. I heard of this because this judge wrote a play, and it was performed in NY once and I read about the judge in the NYer.
