They really don't make popes like they used to. You know, the kind who may have sorta kinda been in the Hitler Youth -- but reluctantly! And then kinda sorta tried to cover up all that unpleasantness about Catholic priests raping all the children, and bishops keeping it on the down low, when he was a lowly cardinal. And
I don't think he does care. Certainly doesn't seem to be acting like it. But the media and pollsters care. And of course, it is kind of news when prominent (not good! just prominent) politicians go out of their way to call out a major religious leader.
The messed up thing is how many of these wingnuts are (nominally) Catholic. I mean, yeah, the Catholic Church is very opposed to abortion, has several issues with women's rights, and is anti-LGBT, but in most other areas they're antithetical to the modern Republican party. They are against unfettered capitalism, opposed the War in Iraq, clearly condemn war crimes (targeting non-combatants is absolutely forbidden), oppose torture, against the death penalty, promote forgiveness and redemption (as in for the common criminal (you know, "thugs," and "gangsters,"), not a hypocritical politician), promote charity, seek to remedy economic injustice, endorse the theory of evolution, promote environmentalism and conservation, pro-immigrant, etc. It's not surprising that many American Catholics are Democrats. In fact, in the US many Catholics are even more liberal. So I find Republican Catholics kind of funny. It's like they hear the church leader say "life begins at conception," and "marriage is a sacrament between one man and one woman," and go "okay, I heard enough." "Uhh, you missed the part about feeding the hungry, assisting the poor, giving shelter to the needy, and how we actually all it when we say literally all life is sacred."
Adjunct, really? I mean, yeah, they've been a staunch ally of Republicans in opposing abortion and LGBT rights, but they disagree on pretty much everything else.
They've been extremely vociferous, to the point of obnoxiousness, on those two issues and have given, up to now, pretty much lip service on "everything else." I never heard of a cardinal refusing a Republican politician communion because he voted for the death penalty or against funding food stamps.
I had a fellow Catholic (by 'fellow' I mean he's not a lapsed one) just tell me in disgust that he wasn't going to give the Church any more money because "Pope Francis is a socialist."
I told him that I'm sure the Church will now go bankrupt.
But seriously, in my Catholic high school I wrote a paper once on Catholic Social Teaching, which included something called "preferential option for the poor," which meant that any social policy needs to be considered from the point of view of its effect on the poorest of the community. If it will hurt them, then it should not be adopted. Because the point of society is to secure the dignity of the poor, not to help the rich be rich.
But, now that I think of it, Catholic Social Teaching came out before Saint Reagan's Christian Supply-Side Economics, and its greatest teaching : "Helping the poor is the business of private charity, not the state."
Oh wait, Reagan wasn't a saint. He wasn't even Catholic! Maybe.. that was never the church's position? And Francis is just emphasizing a part of Catholic doctrine that has been ignored lately in favor of "gays are bad," and "abortion is for whores"?
Francis doesn't care how he is doing in the polls because he only answers to two things, his conscience and his Boss. Most politicians do not have the former. And the latter is the last lobbyist who paid for their blowjob.
So, there's literally a billion Catholics in the world and about 69 million in the US. That works out to... *mashes calculator buttons randomly* ...about 6% of global Catholics?
Something tells me he doesn't, in fact, give a shit about what American conservatives think. If I were giving a sermon to 100 people, I wouldn't listen to the one asshole in the back yelling "UR DOIN' IT RONG!!!"
Maybe he's afraid he'll lose the next Pope election. We'll see how he does in the debates against Cardinal Baldisseri next Easter in Dallas.
MILF
Stupid Jesus loves people talk. Thanks Obama!
That gif convinced me I already have started day drinking.

After seeing the Catholic church acting for so long as an adjunct of the Republican party, I can hardly bear the schadenfreude.

"Love one another." Jay gets taken out of context all the time.
He has always prefered surprise and fear.
Francis has an uphill battle against deeply entrenched special interests. Sound like anyone else we know?

What do I know, I'm lapsed.

Ironically, the Bible spends vastly more time talking about economic policy than it does about abortion or gay marriage.
Still, it's good of Jeb to flat-out state that he only uses his religion to make decisions when he knows it agrees with what he wants to do.
