What’s really interesting here is that both sides on the issue of modern medicine are fucked up.

The trend amongst conservatives is;

Homeopathic and the wellness grifts where they think Beef Tallow and Turmeric are some magic elixirs. Being so anti-vaxx they don’t care if they die from a preventable virus. Going to unlicensed practitioners, shady chiropractors, and ingesting every vitamin they can in mass amounts never knowing what the fuck is really in those vitamin pills they’re poppin’

They also tend to take random snake oil gobbility goop for their cancers and end up dying rather quickly of….cancer.

The trend amongst liberals is;

The absolute worship of modern medicine to the point where they never question institutions, health insurance, doctors, researchers, and who’s funding everything and why. They’ll take whatever drug their Doc prescribes. They’ll be so staunchly Team Vaccine, they’ll ignore the fact that the Covid vaccine has been the most profitable biomedical product in history, by a lot.

Many think there’s zero value to anything “natural” and that Herbalism is woo woo. They love themselves lab created everything. Lab created meats, flavorings, and pesticides. Bioengineered foods where the “vitamins and minerals” are added in varied levels; some too little some too much.

They don’t care that science has been co-opted by profit. They still think most scientists are in it “for the greater good” rather than for their own self-enrichment.

So yea, both sides of this are fucked up.

As a non-profit Soil Scientist who’s worked with both conservative farmers and liberal scientists; The blinders are being worn on BOTH sides.

Conservatives push their science skepticism into a religious and political context. Liberals push their unwavering trust and support of a for-profit-only science into their own religion and poltical ideology. Two extremes being extremely critical of each other instead of finding common grounds.

Ex #1 : Abortion and Vaccines - Both of these subjects have a common denominator. Bodily autonomy. Once we agree on bodily autonomy, then both sides of those issues have bodily autonomy rights. Something we should agree on to not be hypocrites.

Ex #2 : For Profit Science and Non-Profit Science - Both of these can still exist via wants vs needs. Pre-1980’s there were still segments of science not based in profit. Up until the late 1950’s healthcare insurance WAS NOT FOR PROFIT. Jonas Salk gave us the Polio vaccine FOR FREE. He didn’t profit off of it. When you talk to anti-vaxxer’s a large portion of them have a great deal of respect for Jonas Salk and think the polio vaccine was great. They might offer you a shitton of wild and ridiculous reasons for that, but the main underlying factor is that a scientist cared more about the lives of others than his own self-enrichment.

He wasn’t the only scientist who didn’t profit off of his discoveries. Clair Patterson, Mario Molina, Rosalind Franklin, Marie Tharp, and many other science hero’s truly put people and the importance of their work ahead of profit.

Both sides should be able to come together on this instead of being in misinformation, greedy, and propaganda-ridden echo chambers.

“Street cred” - is that found in the driveways running through the trailer park? Not to housing shame anyone, but it’s not my milieu.

Its always the religious fanatics finding ways to remove themselves from the gene pool.

If a Universal Creator exists, I'm pretty sure that Creator is sick of Christians claiming God demanded the sacrifice of his illegitimate kid.

Many of us saw the older woman screaming, "I don't need a vaccine, I'm washed in the blood of Jesus."

Then two weeks later her family was on Facebook begging for "prayer warriors."

The prayers didn't work.

So. Many. Darwin. Awards.

I don't know about every other super liberal person, but I do everything my doctors tell me to EXCEPT I drink like a motherfucker because how the hell else am I going to make it and my doctors are like "Okay, that one thing."

Evolutionary failures will find new and exciting ways to remove themselves from the gene pool.

It doesn't matter if you don't believe in evolution, because evolution knows you suck!

There must be some studies out there that establish that there is an unmistakable correlation between IQ and the actuarial tables, and between IQ and political beliefs.

I don't know that it's necessarily IQ so much ...

but there IS brain science

I can't find my favorite clip on this (because I'm looking for it, of course) -- but there is this one

Political party is a confounding variable. Education causes one to both be more liberal and listen to your doctor.

The Republican Senator from Pennsylvania said it: "Education creates liberals."

"M"'s avatar

They don't "believe in" education either

So there's that

But on the other hand conservatives tend to have more kids, so it all works out, I guess.

Lynn Grant's avatar

If they don't vaccinate their kids all the horrible childhood diseases will strike the grubby, little trailer park kids. Evolution removes the unfit from the gene pool.

Let's just hope they mail in their ballots before they shed that mortal coil.

Oh, wait, SCROTUS is banning mail in ballots.

I like the concept of touting this as "fake news" so that more of the Right will double down on not going for vaccines and treatments.
