So I'm gonna be that guy (well, gal) and say that not all slaveholders were white. N'awlins certainly had it's own peculiar take on the "Peculiar Institution." There was a small community there known as the Free People of Color, mostly made up of black women and their bi-racial children. Some of them owned slaves as well. Barbara Hambly has a series of historical mysteries set in said community. Her protagonist is the dark-skinned son of an African-American woman and her first (Black) husband. His half-sister is much lighter and the child of mom's White "Protector."
I've been reading "the American Home front 1941-1942 by Alistair Cooke.The attitudes he, as a Brit, observed in the US and wrote about were pretty disturbing to me, as was the over all change in even the physical part of the US.

I have felt nothing but shame for as long as I can remember. Learning what the US did to Black people and the Native American hit me hard and deeply. I have never gotten over it. Nothing will ever be enough to make up for it. The only thing we could do to make some amends is to integrate both groups as equals and have them help chart a path for their futures and ours. That will not happen in my lifetime and in all probability it will never happen. This country will fragment into several countries before it is all over and I hope that Black people and Native Americans get their own countries to do with as they wish. They will never get equality or justice while being part of a White country.
