Today, assuming they don't tell you to fuck off, a cop wearing 50 lbs of battle rattle is going to show up and shoot pepper balls at Fluffy until he knocks him down, laugh, and arrest you for objecting.
If Uncle Billy, who had a bad experience in Korea, started seeing "g**ks" in the trees, a police officer would come by, maybe sit with Billy and have a quiet talk about the Frozen Chosin, maybe have a drink or even a sniffle or two, Uncle Billy would go back inside and get drunk and maybe go to jail. Now, Jimmy, who is schizophrenic, starts yelling about bats crawling on the moon and half a dozen trigger happy over armed cops show up, Jimmy refuses to do anything they say because who knows who's the bat? They dogpile him, he squirms loose, starts running, and they shoot him dead.
The cops are taught that every civilian is a potential enemy and fuck that cat. Empathy is trained out of them, because empathy slows your trigger finger. They don't have the first notion of what to do with someone who is mentally ill, because they have had weapons of war given to them, they are by God going to learn how to use them, and fuck that nutjob.
They need to "defund" that Gravy Seal response training and put money into mental health specialists who can talk someone down and whose first response isn't to pull a weapon. They need non-emergency responders (like the HEROES in Atlanta) who will bring you a gallon of gas or change a tire or catch a scared kitten. That's what "defund the police" means and someone needs to explain it that way.

The greatest threat to the future of our nation is AI. It is clear from the reporting that the AI companies do not have anyone's interest at heart but their own. Their only purpose is to keep the eyes and ears of children within reach of ADS. Further, AI "guardrails" aren't adequate for keeping children safe from bad actors such as sales people and others who wish to exploit the lack of media literacy among children.
The development of good and appropriate uses of machine learning and LLMs takes time and money. These people need to get revenue in fast to keep up with the gigantic investments they are making. They need consumer's cash to stay afloat.
Maybe in a good economy they *might* be able to pull this off. Not now.
