Gotta create more space for so new people can fill those world famous/infamous (looking at you The Villages) retirement/assisted care facilities. Turns out the virus is very efficient like that.

(I personally find this approach disgusting)

It also points out that voting involves more than just picking a governor, attorney general, or legislature. In many states, judges are elected, and some do not list party affiliation. But few voters pay attention, not voting for judges at all, or picking a name that sounds familiar. Or sometimes, just by their place on the ballot, with candidates near the top being more likely to be elected than those at the bottom.

North Carolina is a perfect example. For years, party affiliation was not listed. Votes typically went to men (not women) with your generic Anglo names. And for several years this century, Republicans carried a majority in the state Supreme Court. Unfortunately for the GOP, their hubris led them to believe that their gerrymandered majority in the legislature meant that the majority would favor them in statewide court races. So they passed a law listing party affiliation in statewide judicial races. In 2018, it became apparent that they made a major error. While not the only reason for the current 6-1 Democratic Supreme Court majority, it was the cause of making it a Democratic majority.

The GOP, Russia, and some extreme progressives played up that appointing liberal judges was still no reason to vote for Hillary. I hope the past three and a half years under Trump has opened people's eyes. Judicial elections are just as important as any other office. It doesn't matter if it is a direct judicial election, electing a governor who appoints judges and the legislature that confirms them, or even a retention election, you must keep in mind who will be filling seats in the top courts of states and the federal judiciary. Spend the time learning who these people are and what they stand for.

This is going to be March all over again. People are simply not going to send their kids to school. Then what will DeSantis do, jail all the parents?

I used to know a Jamie Lynn back home in Ashford when we were quite little. Funny that.

Anyway, Florida is a hot mess. My district is doing all remote learning for their first quarter at least, and there's a hybrid for later in the year if we can get there. But we're those damn elitist, crime ridden Northerners. snort.

I dropped off some things at our school's district office (the only place open at this point in time), and was informed by a person in the know there that 1) school will only be online come September, and 2) they are having a hard time getting the necessary educational stuff to do this effectively/efficiently/in any way shape or form. If I could have hugged her, I would have.

ETA: we have a good reputation for helping children with issues (even one, bless her heart (in a GOOD way) with microcephaly. We're like that.

Deaths are down mostly because a) scientists and hard working docs are getting lots of practice figuring out how to best treat this thing and b) fewer cases are old people, many more cases are young people.

The virus is still spreading like crazy, minimally controlled, vastly underdetected.

My (formerly pure red) county explicitly posted on their dashboard that the state numbers are unreliable. I am dumbfounded.

We all know how this is going to work out. Desantis's toady's in the courts are going to back him, all the way to the Supremes, and the schools will open on schedule. Two weeks later, with a new outbreak throughout the state directly related to the decision to open the schools, the schools will be forced to close.

I hope all affected parties, teachers, staff, and parents, sue the living duck out of the state government for endangering the lives of its citizens.

EDIT: Obviously, I didn't mean to type "living duck", but I liked it, so I left it in.

Since I always vote absentee, I sit down with my ballot and go to the county Democratic Party's sample ballot on their website. That way, there's no chance I might accidentally vote for a Republican for judge.

*sigh* We could have had fucking adults in charge and actually dealt with this by paying everyone to stay home for a month, but here we are and it looks like this is just going to last indefinitely. I'm not even holding out hope for a vaccine to be available anymore because the anti-vaxxers and Q dipshits have joined forces like a really shitty Voltron and who knows if enough people will actually get vaccinated for it to be effective here.

I may be wrong, but I think DeSantis does not care 1 alligator tooth whether the schools open or not, people get sick or not. I think he trying to keep the Trump base in FL behind him, take it to other places, and run for pres in 2024. He has to push this hard, cause Lil' Marco will be running too.
