The split that actually occurred was Northern/Southern in each party, not red/blue. You also fail to mention how the GOP's presidential candidate for 1964 voted against it and how a good many of those Southern Dems, AKA Dixiecrats, abandoned the Democratic Party to become either independent or Republican, fulfilling LBJ's concern that the vote would lose the south for the Dems for years to come.
