The entire system is insane. Why does Medicare not cover home care or nursing care, which lots of elderly people need? By the way, should you have the misfortune to have your spouse become seriously disabled, you will enter a hell world that the stuff Robyn outlines only hints at. (Pretty much, you will have to get divorced to get any help.) It’s all insanely complex with layers of bureaucracy that make it inefficient and expensive compared to say, just taking care of people.

Also fuck Gavin Newsom.

Yeah, the county I lived in just dropped their poverty line, so a single person making less than $109k is below the poverty line. A family of 4? $158k. But all the benefits, SNAP, WIC, low income housing, Medi-Cal, all of that, are based on federal numbers, which clocks in at you can't make over $21k. So somewhere between $21k and $158k, that's where the government says "fuck you" and where A LOT OF PEOPLE live. So paycheck to paycheck, never enough to make it ahead, but making too much to get any help. If you ever try to put $ into savings for, say, a first month/last month/security deposit? Which on a one bedroom ($3200 here) can be almost $10k. If you have savings or assets they cut off your assistance. This country hates the poor but makes it impossible to get out of poverty.

I live in a small foothill community in N. CA. We have an Indian health clinic here (that's what it's called) that I, even though of European, not indigenous, descent get to use because there aren't enough Indians to cover the CDB. I am just poor enough, and just old enough, and just lucky enough, to be eligible for Medi-Medi... Medical and Medicare. I also receive a modest SS income, and SNAP benefits. These things, along with being connected to an amazing and supportive partner, and her mom, allow me to live a pretty chill existence. We even get to travel now and then. Which is great! But every time I leave the clinic I think about how ALL Americans should be in my situation. My situation, as with most people in the country, is dependent on the state and county and town in which I live, in addition to aforementioned financial and age-related qualifications. So I'm skating by for now, but what about if we move? I will have to do the research and do the paperwork for whatever I can glean, benefits-wise, from my new state, county, and town. This is just stupid. A stupid system. Which is one reason I am exploring emigrating to the country of my ancestors where they have a national health care system. USA! USA! Meh.

Ta, Robyn. I'm on a tiny island off the other coast. I work in a FQHC in The South Bronx. If they weren't covered by Medicaid, my clients, who are all HIV positive adults, would not get the medications they need to stay alive.

Newsom can eat shit.

$2K? Where do they find these numbers? That amount wouldn't cover Copay for a reasonably thorough colonoscopy. You know, the kind where they make little digital prints of your insides to take home and put next to the Christmas photos in the family album.

Never much cared for Newsom. A little too “slick Willie” for my taste. And of course Kim Gargoyle

His brand of California “liberalism” would never fly out here in the Midwest

This is unimaginably cruel. I once worked with a chemist (back in the 80's), with a PhD and a good salary whose wife needed nursing home care; he had to divorce her so their entire family wasn't bankrupted. It just broke him utterly, feeling he had to abandon the woman he loved so she could get the care she needed.

Yeah, it’s pretty sad when you have to get legal help to protect the very modest assets of an old lady from forfeiture because of a health condition. while at the same time the wealthiest get huge tax breaks on their estates

and unfortunately, in more cases than not wouldn’t have had the advantage of a couple of sons that could afford to hire a lawyer for her

Gavin always was kind of a political chameleon, left-wing when it seemed to suit the majority, as when he was mayor of San Francisco, and less so as he ascended to state roles and the demographics shifted.

It's always been pretty clear that whatever convictions he may personally had have were secondary to whatever he had to do to stay in office.

If the right had any sense of proportion they wouldn't trust him as far as they could toss him, and the left won't have anything to do with him after this.

Which makes his stupidity of the dinner at The French Laundry during the lockdown all that much more inexcusable. If you are going to base your career on reading the room, then you bloody well better be able to read the room. I suspect he would have lost the recall if Davis hadn't. Ca Democrats were not going to let the republcions make that a standard part of their playbook
