Thanks Michael. I just wonder how different this situation would be if it had been a black or Asian or Hispanic former Marine doing this to, let's say, a white male who had been trying to sexually assault or rape someone. In either situation, this chokehold is a technique that may result in someone being severely injured or killed, so the person doing it needs to be held accountable. But no way the National Police Association would be rallying members to defend what I'm describing.
When I got assigned to shore patrol duty in Long Beach, we got a brief training from the marines. We were told to never use a chokehold. We got to beat the hell out of that dummy with our Billy clubs though. My senior chief told me, you won't need that just let them fight.
‘Before we jump to any conclusions about who is right, and who is wrong, in this case, let’s take a moment to reflect on Charles Whitman’s service record.’
LINES was the original hand to hand fighting system for the marines. It was realistic, easy to train and pretty much limited to actual military combat scenarios. The shift to jujitsu based systems by all the services was nothing but a recruiting tool. It's not particularly effective in full battle rattle. But it has put a bunch of amped up partially trained guys on the streets and led to around half a dozen deaths
Thank you. As a fellow vet, what you describe is literally the first thing I thought. He knew exactly what he was doing. He should probably get in MORE trouble, because he used a choke hold he KNEW could kill someone. I don't put other veterans on a pedestal, and neither should you. The ones who get involved with right-wing extremism after their service are the especially nasty pieces of work we all should be concerned about.
Cal Thomas must be a zillion years old. I remember him spewing right-wing garbage in dead-tree newspapers.
“Why do people condemn Lee Harvey Oswald’s actions when he was a US Marine?”
Police unions need to fucking die

And the police union is inserting itself in this because...? Oh yeah. I got it.

“Semper Fidelis means ‘Always Faithful.’ “
As opposed to the Navy’s motto of “Semper Temulentus” or “Always Drunk.”
He knew exactly how long it would take to kill a man and he willfully exceeded it. He did not restrain the the man he killed him
Minor point of critique:"Semper Fidelis" means "Always Faithful"."Semper Fi" then means "Always Fai".

I hope the state has an expert witness saying exactly this. Cal Thomas is still a thing?
IIRC, he was part of the Moral Majority. So, a Falwell associate calling someone out for not being a real Reverend is first class projection.

Ah yes, the heady days of wrist locks and leg sweeps.
