(See Update/Clarification at end)Gosh, we're pretty sure no one saw this coming! As federal money has become a smaller portion of its overall funding, public broadcasting has become increasingly reliant on private donors. A lot of those donors are "viewers like you," giving a few bucks to get a totebag and a sense of having done the right thing. (God knows we pledge so that if we get picked to play the Sunday Puzzle with Will Shortz, we can say we're a
I don't think that's true either literally or figuratively. PBS is, like most poor working girls, driven to it by economic necessity. On the other hand, laughing at the size of the john's dick may get him upset.
Well, I think the Koch bros treat science much as Tenn Rep Fincher treats the gubmint munneez - fine for me but not for thee. My understanding is that any science that doesn't support their world view (nae domination) is junk science. My recollection is that Nova covers many subjects that could be construed to fall into that "junk" category.
I no longer go to the State Theater. I'm glad City Opera has moved out.
Then there's Koch's neighbor at 740, Steven Horrible Schwartzman, who plastered his name all over the Astor-Lenox-Tilden Main Branch of the NY Public Library.
Hard not to think in terms of tornados when it comes to 71st and Park.
Didn't Ray Kroc's widow give PBS $100 million unrestricted a couple of years ago? Which they spent--not entirely stupidly--in opening a west coast news bureau.
Ultimately, this story has a happy ending: the film aired without censorship and Koch was maneuvered into withdrawing from the PBS board. This is good news for the news.
People who are pickled in bile and have gold-plated healthcare tend to live long, long lives.
They do, however, smell like maggot-ridden corpses and leave a greenish slime trail. This is why it's not a good idea to buy the expensive seats at the opera.
They should add another 10 minutes to the film, where they talk about all the fun fallout. You know, just in case Koch doesn't already look like a complete fuckwad.
i love you doc, but this is almost as long as a new yorker article and i leave the reading of new yorker articles to mr fuflans who is almost never hungover.
As a NOVA watcher, seeing Koch on screen as a major donor always puts me in a mindset to actually spit at my own teevee. I don't even know for sure which brother it is because the revulsion takes over so quickly that my vision narrows to just that last name.
But then I'm left wondering, knowing what subjects NOVA covers, how does a Koch reconcile himself with supporting the program?

If Koch is upset because WNET showed something he probably would not have liked, what else has he been paying WNET not to show?
I was wondering why today's Sesame Street was brought to us by the letter $
