Quentin Crisp did the experiment to find out how long it'd take before one walks as much dirt out of one's apartment as one walks in.

What was that shitty Steven Segal movie (but I repeat myself) where he was a ship's cook?

As a former teacher, I would like to go on record as saying giving teachers guns is a horrible idea, though it would make parent teacher conferences run a lot smoother.

Of course, like everyone else on the right, his understanding of affirmative action is 180 degrees from the truth.

The government has determined that black people have just the same ability as white people, and therefore their historic underrepresentation in a wide field of endeavors, such as college admission and government employment, are indicative of systemic factors which need extraordinary measures to overcome.

I know right, it's almost as if a thing whose primary design concern was being the most effective tool for killing possible is more useful offensively than defensively. Whoever woulda thought?

Odd statistic -- possibly not made up: People who are robbed at gunpoint are less likely to be injured than by other means. The logic is the victims are more cooperative and the robber calmer. So the government should give robbers guns.

Another odd statistic: People are less likely to get in an accident after having a drink. The logic is they are aware they're under the influence so compensate by being extra careful. (But after few more they can't compensate.) So the government should be rewarding people who test BAC 0.05 - 0.05.

Here's one Mamet will love: The damage in a fire is directly proportional to the number of fire trucks on the scene. We should send fewer trucks to reduce the damage.

It's really nothing more than a very slight variation on the Wookie Defense.

Throw up a smokescreen and hope the confusion results in nothing being done.

The arguments to the contrary escape me.

In other words, because David Mamet is stupid, we can't have nice things.

BTW, speaking of phantom statistics, that 2 million defensive gun uses? Well, that's self-reported "defensive" gun "uses", and would include, say, the shooting of Trayvon Martin. Harvard studies have shown that guns are far more likely to be used to intimidate intimates and escalate arguments than they are to be used in self defense, the 2 million number is a fiction of long-tail statistics, and most self-reported "self defense" gun uses are in fact socially undesirable.

I love how the NRA has decided that the Wild West had too much gun regulation (no guns in bars, for example).

Allowances must be made: Mamet's from Chicago. "Things Change" and "House of Games" are still really good movies. And anybody who puts Ricky Jay in movies has done a public service.
