I think that a part of it is identity politics. It's something that their side is invested in, so they need to stick by their "team". I think that another big part of it is a bunch of this seems to be wrapped up in laissez-faire economic true belief and the notion that government action is bad and wrong and the only way to oppose the solution is to deny the problem.

Mann's predictions are actually extremely conservative. He actually believes we have a chance.

If it helped people understand climate change I would agree to the change. I already know what the F equivalent of 21 and -40 C are. But temperature is an exception to the superiority of the metric system: centigrade intervals are too wide.

Me too, that's over optimism for you.

People never admit they are wrong. Which is one of many reasons why we will all die within a few decades.

Adding accuracy can be well intentioned, or do you prefer being (slightly) wrong all the time over ever having to re-evaluate your ideas?

My pet peeve with this is that, instead of just taking away the rulers and thermometers and replacing them, they spent ages trying to teach us how to convert. You don't need to convert, especially if you're the last one using SAE. It was doomed from the start, and then Reagan.

Exon did their own research. They have known since the 1970's. And they could have invested in research in alternative energy and been positioned to sell that energy when the tech was mature. But here is your answer: transitioning away from carbon energy makes all existing carbon energy reserves a stranded asset. And they, then and now, have no intention of not converting every penny of the oil reserves they own into profit. And if that kills us all, those who made the decision will be dead by then, and the ones who remain will be able to buy what remedies exist. Make no mistake about the wealthy. They are the enemy of the entire human race. They deserve far more than to have their taxes raised.

They could make plastics instead. Not that I really want them to, but I don't see that that market will shrivel up.

That is not the only research they sat on. My uncle was an attorney for API (American Petroleum Institute) and he had PhD in Genetics and had gone to 2 years of med school. He signed an NDA but stuff he did tell me before he died would set your hair on fire. (He was the science guy/law guy who trained the trial attorneys so they could deal with science guys/stuff in a court of law. He also looked at science data that they compiled and help them both understand it and how to deal with liabilities (that is to say weasel their way out of every liability). We really are in the New Gilded Age and we will destroy our way thru all the beauty of the earth to our own destruction as well as every good thing here on Earth.
