Me too... ancestry.com was an eye opener. I have to say that things vastly improved in my grandparents generation but prior to that... man... they sure did get around. They didn't seem to care much about being faithful or even getting divorced.

The handwriting on the wall for me was the development boom of the 70s and 80s. When I was a kid, St. Pete Beach was a quaint, groovy place to hang out. By the time I left Florida in 1987, you couldn't see the beach from the road from all of the hotels and condos built right on the shore. Then, when the shore line was devoured, inland places where I used to fly model airplanes (while dodging rattlesnakes) soon be came infested with enormous condo/apartment complexes. Aside from my snarky recipe above, I think the thing that really ruined Florida was money. Developers and the lampreys that assist them become rich. Once they become rich they think they're important and that their opinion matters most. From there is one short crazy step to politics and viola! Florida in the 21st Century.
