Wouldn't be surprised if Netanyahu has personally ordered aid workers (and press) to be targeted to discourage other aid workers from coming. Bibi is a genocidal maniac whose goal is the removal of ALL Palestinians from Israel, by any means. Starvation will eliminate Palestinians more quickly and more cheaply than military action and it also gives him enough wiggle room to claim it's just an "unavoidable tragedy" out of his control.

"Israel is better than the way this war is being waged. It is better than blocking food and medicine to civilians. It is better than killing aid workers who had coordinated their movements with the Israel Defense Forces."

And yet, here we are.

It's 4 in the morning I had to stop from laughing out loud at that statement. You sure about that, chief?

It isn't that they were western deaths- there were Palestinian members of that aide team as well as westerners, and other westerners have died in this thing before. It was that they were aide workers, clearly marked aide workers, that had coordinated with the government before hand, in an area that said government controls. Can't brush this one off as wrong place wrong time, so to speak.

Horrific. It’s all tragic and horrific. Hamas killing 1200 civilians at a music festival was needless and horrific. Israel bombing Gaza to rubble is needless and horrific. Killing humanitarian workers simply trying to bring food to starving people is so far beyond the pale that it makes you question whether there is any hope for us. I don’t know enough to get into the weeds on Middle East politics. But Palestinians deserve to live free of violence. Israelis deserve to live free of violence. The things people do to each other is just hopelessly sad. If you live a life free of violence and oppression, and you have food and shelter and safety and friends and family, consider yourself very, very lucky.

It was this killing, with the death of an Australian aid worker, that finally pushed the Australian Prime Minister to condemn Israel. Nice to know one Australian life is worth more than thousands of dead Gazan children. I'm SO fucking disgusted.

As Wonkette says, better late than never, and these courageous aid workers may save even more lives with their deaths than they did with their work. But the whole thing is foul.

We are allied with a country that is approaching international pariah status, if it's not there already. I as an American don't like that. At all.

If Biden keeps so much as one bullet from Bibi, the Republicans will howl about "betrayal" and "stabbing in the back" from now until November. Too fucking bad. Biden needs to take the political hit and get genuinely tough with Israel. He needs to stop worrying about a bunch of people who are so stupid that they can't tell the difference between an ally that regularly commits atrocities, and one that is defending itself against unprovoked aggression from a powerful neighbor.

Lucian Truscott IV has a gut-wrenching analysis of the weapon that was probably used against the WCK aid workers. It seems to be a terrorist-assasinating missile that is a derivative of a Hellfire missile that, horribly, kills without even breaking out the car windows. (See the top photo.) These things are precision weapons… some of America’s precious best. It would seem impossible to use these things by accident, much less make three successive mistakes on three successive vehicles Damn. Just damn.

Yes that absolutely explains why those vehicles weren't blown apart. These were targeted assassinations and the IDF must have had permission from the highest levels to target INTERNATIONAL aid workers. It's clear that Netenyahu does not give a flying fuck about what the world thinks.

President Biden, unlike the three previous presidents, had the courage to finally say, enough is enough, and get us the hell out of the 20+ year quagmire in Afghanistan. Many thousands died needlessly, and violently, and the US essentially just set trillions of dollars on fire to accomplish fuck all.

My hope is he will be able to summon the same courage to face the predictable blowback from the same assholes who wanted to stay in Afghanistan forever, and stand up to Netanyahu. Based on Netanyahu's decisions to bomb Damascus, ensuring a wider war in the Middle East, and his complete failure to protect civilians, hospitals, refugee camps, and humanitarian workers, it is unlawful for the US to continue to provide funding and weapons to Israel. US support must screech to a halt. Biden's legacy and his reelection are at risk if he continues to insist his support for Israel is "unconditional".

Expand full comment
Gammarae's avatar

Biden had no choice about Afghanistan; it was trump who cut that deal. Biden will take the heat for the withdrawal failing to achieve perfection, but that's his job.

Expand full comment
Brando's avatar

I hope he does, and soon. Afghanistan is a good analogy--Biden long supported our war there, but as time passed and he realized what a mess it was, he pulled out at his first opportunity. (Sadly, he got no credit for it from a country that begged presidents to do this)

I'm hoping this incident sparks enough outcry that he can make a decisive break with Netanyahu, and cut us loose from this madness, and establish a different relationship with Israel that supports when they're in the right but opposes them when they're not. It does neither party any good to make our support "unconditional".

Election-wise, it's complicated. How many people will vote against Biden for stopping aid to Israel vs vote for him? And how much are those defense contracts worth? Morally it's a no-brainer. Stop arming Netanyahu.

The Israeli people are in a similar, but far worse situation, as us. A desperate madman actually has his hands on the levers of power, responsible for tens of thousands of deaths. Their institutions have failed them, and the only thing that can actually do anything about this are the Israeli people exercising their democratic rights to be heard.
