As an old, I'm officially against people falling. He looked okay when he got up so I imagine the most severe injury was to his ego.

re: Steve Bannon, "We're gonna have ICE surround the polls...We'll never again allow an election to be stolen."

I'm very confused -- what are these "polls" he keeps ranting about? We here in OR & WA don't have anything like that -- we've voted 100% by (pre-franked!) mail for over 20 years now.

Is he going to assign an ICE agent to guard each mailbox?

Can I get mine to walk the dog if I'm busy?

I think the targets will be polls in urban areas of swing states, particularly those with lots of folks who don't look like white Europeans. As they've repeatedly demonstrated, they can detain anyone they want as long as necessary. That threat will absolutely keep some folks from showing up to vote and the overwhelming majority of ballots cast are in-person:

7 states ONLY use vote-by-mail: https://www.lgbtmap.org/democracy-maps/absentee_and_mail_voting_policies

Only 14 (3/4 of them very red) require an excuse to get a mail ballot, and no state disallows vote-by-mail.

The cure for this threat is for everyone who can to vote by mail.

littlerice vice's avatar

Going to vote at the polls is a social fun time for me! The chit-chat gets me caught up on the juicy-schmuicy dirt floating around! Plus I get to flash my MINI-GOVERMINT I.D. Everyone gets a LARGE CHARGE at my smirking face!

Alternative Dog's avatar

Okay, ask yourself what’s more likely: that all those who’ve always voted at their local polling station will jump through whatever hoops are necessary for them to vote by mail, or the authoritarians who are currently in power, and who’ve been doing all the preliminary work they need to do to subvert fair elections, will go ahead with what they’ve been planning for the past five years? I’d say the latter is more likely by at least 5 to 1.

Also, remember who is in charge of the U.S.P.S. and the recent changes they’ve made that may delay when a ballot is postmarked. If it’s dropped off in time but doesn’t get postmarked in time, it’s not counted.

It's a very fair point that nothing can insure that such a plan would work, and there are definitely some counter-measures in place.

However, in 2020, as noted above, 43% of votes were done by mail, and we don't need everyone to do this, just those who plan to vote Dem, and not even all of THEM -- I'm confident that many (most) blue states won't allow this shit, so we're maybe talking about Dems in swing House districts (and states with very close Senate races). They are now warned and have about 9 months to get their VBM in place.

As to blue states disallowing it, if they had tried it here in OR back in the day (we're 100% VBM now), I'd expect an immediate local law requiring all law enforcement to stay 1,000 ft from any polling place, and local cops detailed to insure that feds complied. Cities like Austin can do that, too (although their House representation has been gerrymandered to Hell -- looks like a sliced pizza).

I am willing to remain hopeful that good people will do what’s necessary to preserve our democracy, but given what I’ve observed over the past year, I won’t be the least bit surprised if things go horribly wrong. The good news is that more and more people are waking up to the danger.

Resist Herr GropenFuhrer's avatar

A-fucking-men to all of that ... except that I WOULD be surprised if it all goes horribly wrong. A year ago, I would not have been -- I went to bed for a week after the election, in the sure knowledge that all of THIS (waves hands) would happen.

But recently, with all of the news (and even non-news sites, like social groups for games and hobbies, etc.) constantly talking about how horrible it all is and all of the terrible things that are being done IN OUR NAMES (as Americans), and the massive resistance we've seen arising just in the past 2 months or so, and the increasingly aggressive stance by district court judges, I've become much more optimistic about the midterms.

Yes, obviously, they will flood the zone with all of the terrible things they can think of, and they have a lot of resources, but we vastly out-number them and their numbers are shrinking quickly as federal workers bail out all over. With judges now requiring judicial warrants and there being nowhere near enough immigration judges or DOJ lawyers to do that required due process, their pace will necessarily slow down, which will enrage Stephen Miller and make them commit even more own-goals as the midterms approach.

I'm hoping for such a huge blowout Blue Tsunami that all of their AI BS won't save them (we should also expect all sorts of insane AI propaganda videos on social media in the last few weeks of the election campaign), but in addition to telling everyone who plans to vote D to do so by mail, we also need to remind them not to fall for any last-minute propaganda.

Just those two simple things should pretty much insure success ... as much as anything can be assured these days ...

"Hey, you guys, did the child rapist pedophile cabal literally invent the QAnon conspiracy about child rape pedo cabals to distract from the very real child rape pedophile cabal-ing they were themselves doing?"

Well, sure. How else are they going to enjoy the thrill of talking about their favorite memories in public while they lie about who they are? Isn't it just DELICIOUS to "do it in public" and not get noticed? That right there is just another form of maturation. I'm gonna go throw up. Again.

MASTURBATION, not maturation.

I hope you feel better soon. Tincture of echinacea root, two half-droppers of the regular size jar in a couple oz of water helps with anything cold or fluish.

Bad Bunny and Green Day count down!!!!! I don’t care about football, but usually watch the half time show. Kendrick Lamar absolutely rocked last year. It was the highest watched Half-time show in history. Jay Z knows what he’s doing; he’s making the Football corporations $$$$, and recruiting future generations of customers. They are gonna be around when Trump’s gone, Trump is pissing off the future customers and this is a business.

My family established a Saturday call during the Pandemic for the family to get together and we still have them several times a month. When we were planning our Superbowl party, I mentioned that Green Day was playing the preshow and one of my brothers had not heard of the band (hip hop fan). I sang a bit of American Idiot to him and another brother explained that the album dated from the Bush II admin. So they will be introduced to new fans, not just young ones.
