I'll be honest, I have some doubts about one particular homeschooling family in my community. Based on this case, I see a lot of warning signs.
Scary domineering dad, a sweet little daughter they adopted from another country and a mom who has this scared shitless smile on her face all the time.
The little girl is a bit of a basketcase but I've always felt a very special connection to her because of how strict and crazy her parents are. I babysat her a few times and always tried to let her chill and just enjoy herself. No rules. Think Matilda and her teacher. But she seemed afraid to have fun. I don't think this is a case of an attachment disorder from her early childhood.
The dad is terrifying. I can chat up anyone but I am too afraid of him. He's super quiet and has a very scary expression of judgment on his face. Recently, they began homeschooling her as a religious thing. They also felt she had some social issues. I don't think she does, the way they think she does. She is a very curious little girl. She is probably a little rebel in her world. A normal kid in ours.
Ugh. So sad. I'm sure there are many others out there amongst us. Beginning to have more trust in my instincts.
