I went to medical school at a CLEARLY racist and sexist institution in Texas. At the time I interviewed there, it was a 'Top 5' medical research institution. They had all 6 liberals at the school serve as my interviewers, in the hopes that my resulting extrapolation of the potential faculty would allay any concerns that might be in my mind regarding some of the problems at such a Texas school.

My accusations arent made in a vacuum. The year they accepted me, they graduated a class with not a single black or hispanic from a class of 168 students. Black and hispanic students had a 'wash out rate' of over 50%, while white students had a rate of ~1%. The surgery program (surgery is the thing my school is largely known for) had only graduated 2 women in the 30 years prior to being a student there. I was a constant and continual pain in the ass to the administration by pointing out the differences in treatment for black and hispanics both in the school and those under treatment.

Suffice it to say that despite being the school's first black or hispanic MD/PhD student and having a full scholarship, I was removed from school in direct violation of the school's own rules for 'academic insufficiency'. This was after scoring a 99% on the 'shelf boards' administered to all students after our didactic training and having a clinical evaluator (professional patient) state 'If I didnt know this was a test of medical students, I would swear you had been a doctor for 20 years'. If you count me rounding with my grandfather at the age of 10, then she was about right.

As a black or hispanic person, anything you are or do is discounted immediately by the medical community, whether you are a doctor or a patient. The patient part has also been clearly and statistically demonstrated:

I used to joke, how do you know you are an American Scientist? The answer is that you are outnumbered by foreign born co-workers 3 to one at your department 4th of July party. It is true and in many ways its a great thing, because no one looks at you or treats you differently if you are black, hispanic, a woman, gay or foreign. The institution you are attached to is most likely patriarchal in nature, but your department lives in harmony. There are almost as many foreign born medical doctors as scientists (30% of all currently practicing doctors in the US are foreign born), but there is no evidence of a similar trend of progressive belief or behavior as a result.

My hypothesis is that since there is so much money in medicine and so many 'big players', that they will resist any changes that affect their 'bottom line' rather than remaining true to the mission statements of any medical institution that I have ever read. It is depressing to read a hospital mission statement when you see with your own eyes how far the reality of medicine diverges from the ideal.

Maybe things will get better, but that isnt happening soon. The hands down best president in my lifetime (Obama makes it look EASY!) being black certainly didnt do anything to reduce 'racial tensions' and the rise of the Trumpanzees means that until they die off or are imprisoned means that there is a militantly ignorant, racially and gender resentment choked population and some of their leaders have called for 'revolution' in the event of a Clinton win.

We are FAR from being a 'post racial' society and look very much forward to President Clinton appointing justices who understand that the law of this nation will have to progress due to the unique constitutional mandate that has accumulated over the course of centuries. The pus filled boil of Trumpanzees is coming to a head and should pop at any time. I do hope they rise up in revolt after the election, if only to see the look on their face when they realize just how few would be willing to even try overthrowning the elected government of the US.

Have a great day!

Tell us how you really feel !(snark from an American born physician of East Indian descent who is still assumed to be "the dog walker" rather than a resident of the neighborhood where I live and walk the dog. I didn't know that was a "thing." Asif Maanvi said we were 'Cardiology/Tech Support brown'....)

It took me a while but I kinda like XD--it reminds me of Cartman from South Park scrunching his eyes when singing/hollering: "...humble folks without temptation."

I wear my heart on my sleeve and as a result have been banned from a fair many sites due to my numerically most numerous comment:

'You are an idiot.'

As a person of color who went to a medical school where the most common last name was 'Patel', I have had a long association with foreign nationals and 1st generation Americans over my medical and scientific careers. I even married a foreign national, my children are half Russian and half American, red, white and blue on both sides.

I cant accept ignorant comments about muslims because I have worked with too many to be able to accept some of the things said about them or their culture. I cant accept the ignorant and hateful things that the right wing says about minorities and immigrants, because I have long been involved and served those communities and know better. I cant accept the ignorant and sexist beliefs of the right wing, nor of their persecution of the LBGTQ community. I have worked for and with too many people with different genders and identities than me to have any belief that being a straight male is an inherently 'superior' position.

Being 'brutally honest' is a lifelong hallmark of mine and if it is wrong, I dont wanna be right!

Have a great day!

Well, now that I'm 52 (and heavier than when I was before babbies), when a security guard mistakes me for a drug rep rather than a physician at a conference, I say "oh, Thank you!" Granted though, it wasn't a life or death situation.

Yeah, I don't question whether they have credentials. I've seen degrees and licenses for all kinds of professions, usually in that person's place of business somewhere. I just wonder if there is something they carry around with them (and if a flight attendant would even know whether such a thing was legitimate or fake).

WOW! In 2016 this stuff is still going on, sad but true. But, I have to say, she looks way too cute to be a doctor, what are the odds that the flight attendant was also jealous. Beautiful people often have to deal with not being taken seriously.

I hated Dr. Benton, too. But that's what his character was supposed to be. So, clearly, the actor did quite well. I remember Louise Fletcher saying how she slipped into a showing of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. When the scene came where Nicholson is choking Nurse Ratched to near death the audience was in a frenzy, yelling, "KILL HER, KILL HER!". She realized that she had so convincingly created a monster that it would be the finest performance of her life.
