If they had the equivalent of generic scan tool data they would be far better off. Most of them are capable of using it or finding someone who can.

Oh....I do mean commercial grade software. Especially commercial grade software. The EPIC electronic health record. You had/have to connect to it using Citrix and if the server it was on failed (which it did often), it paralyzed not one but 3 hospitals. Now imagine being dumb enough to contract that out to a 3rd party

Right there with you on the John Deere tractors--none of their equipment below about 200 HP is manufactured in the US, so if they try to tell you it's an American brand, tell them to blow it out their ear.

While someone could spend between $250K and a couple million on one of the systems I design and not be on a support contract, they would be crazy too and no legitimate customer does (Maybe some day I will tell the story of the illegitimate customer) . So professionally, I'm on the the subscription model side. As a consumer, I didn't like the subscription model, but since some of my favorite programs have come and gone off the market and come back over the years, having a supported version is worthwhile. I kept a PPC Mac working until 2018 to run a single program. And since I do it in my business, its hypocritical to object to them doing it.

However, when I run into a problem, I don't waste time trying to solve it on my own. I call their support. I provide my customers with 24 x 365 world wide support. If someone is going to use a subscription model with me, I expect the same from them and am not shy about using it.

An Apple product only be fixed by Apple technicians — they won't sell the parts or give you the schematics needed to fix it, even if you are totally qualified to do it yourself.

This is increasingly true of pretty much all major electronics manufactures, so no need to single out Apple. Also, think for a second about what sort of shit products all of them would have to put out if they were required to be fixable by mere proles.

By all means, make the parts & specs available, but keep warranties voidable and don't dumb down product design because some moron thinks he's capable of de-gluing a li-ion battery with a heat gun.

There are areas where there is a real need to democratize repair, auto, agriculture, industrial. Absolutely NOT* medical. But consumer electronics is barking up the wrong tree.

*Do you really want your MRI machine fixed by a technician from Bob's Discount Used Mattress & Medical Repair? This life or death equipment really needs to be fixed by licensed professionals and be certified safe.

I confess I got a bigger iPhone because I'm getting older, and I can't see the smaller screen very well anymore. Like calculators with the big buttons. Or large-print books. I like a bigger screen solely because it's easier for me to see. My nephew showed me how to make the text bigger. *sigh* Christ, I feel old.

You mean their impatience with John Deere continues to grow?

My spouse had a brother in an electric wheelchair. He grew up tinkering and fixing it. In high school, his part-time gig was at a medical equipment supply company as a service tech. Sometimes, they'd pull him out of class at school if a disabled student had an issue with their chair or oxygen supply.

My brother-in-law repaired Steiger tractors and parts from around the world. John Deere won't let me touch my new zero turn mower. We probably voided the warranty by welding on a small trailer tow hitch.
