In school there were always teachers who opposed the more reactionary policies promulgated by the administration. They were never obvious about it, but if you paid attention to the subtexts in class, you could pick them out. If you could get to them and convincingly demonstrate that you were serious about the issue, you would sometimes discover support and help from unexpected sources.
You had to be careful not to overplay your hand with them, though, and you had to be mindful of what these sources were risking by helping you.
