I will bear that in mind, as my family has a bad habit of scheduling trips when people end up sick/dying. My grandmother died the week before my parents went on their first trip to England since my dad had served there 30 years previously. His sister INSISTED that he still go. Then, 15 years later, they were on a cruise on the Mediterranean when said sister (my favorite aunt) fell down in her apartment, broke her hip, was there for a day before she was found, was taken to the hospital, and died. She would not let the staff contact any family members; they had to go through her phone book after she died and start calling people til they got an answer. We can only assume that she didn't want my parents to interrupt a trip for a little thing like her dying. (they did come home early, of course).
worse yet, AA is now letting you board early if you have no carry-on. So basically, they'll charge you increasing amounts for every piece of checked baggage, charge you $100 if you try to stuff everything in one bag and it's overweight, force you to use an impossibly small carry-on or face gate check and punish you for having any carry-on at all. And TSA will crawl up your ass if you don't have any checked or carry-on because you're suspicious
