"The area's farms simply couldn't stay in business without undocumented workers."

Dok, this is the worst kept secret in agriculture, as I'm sure you know. True here in Vermont, too. Dairy farming now consists of milking every eight hours. Cows are gone through in 3-4 years and then are fit only for the knacker. No more farmers like my brother ( now retired) to whom the herd was always "the girls." He sold them en masse to another organic dairy man in New York state.

Milking, feeding, mucking and herding cows is hard, dirty and sometimes dangerous work, and locals don't want to do it. Mexican workers take up the slack, and they work fucking hard.

And because big dairy agribiz milks so much and so often, the market gets flooded and no way can smaller farms make it.

So..um...what’s the #metoo status on Lizza now? I enjoy his writing but I don’t think we ever found out what he did. The New Yorker fired him for....something but with his job at CNN they did an internal investigation and they decided to reinstate him.
