The Super Bowl is also going to be in LA in that same stadium so I expect we will see even more stories about unmasked celebrities in two weeks (but I hope no Democratic politicians because jesus this shit is not helpful).

It's funny because I would say the same thing about you missing the point.

The right doesn't need any actual crime or failure to beat the recall drum. If there's no there there, they'll just make something up.

What they do need, though, is our complicity in going along with it. They need us to become outraged over this picture. They need us to look at what's approx 1/500th of a second and decide Newsome is a no good rule breaker who just breaks the rules all the time. Or that he's a power mad narcissist because he's not wearing a mask in the picture while demanding everyond else does. Or that he somehow failed us. Or whatever frothing inanity were willing to blow out of proportion and hold a grudge over because perfection is the only thing we'll accept.

We'll gladly fall in line with that too. Again. Six or eight months from now we'll still get people referencing this picture to highlight how much of a failure he is.

We won't bother to find out if he was wearing a mask prior to the photos. Or was wearing one after the photos were done. Or if he was, as I suspect, in the much less crowded VIP area. Or was in the middle of eating. Or anything else. Because that fraction of a second is all that matters for the reflexive outrage.

So, again: What more needs to be done beyond a minor admonishment for a minor transgression?

You can come sit (6 feet away) by me.

I had NFL season tickets, field level, for over 15 years. I knew all the people in my immediate vicinity, including a girl who sat in front of me, who I got to watch grow up from age 8 until after she graduated from college and became a marine biologist. I loved the energy of going to games in-person with 70,000 screaming fans.

I passed on my season tickets for the 20-21 season because COVID, and sold my PSLs before the 21-22 season. I can’t imagine ever wanting to go to a game in person ever again.

We are all tired of wearing masks. When we happen upon the guy with his mask under his chin, scenes of our gov with no mask just make it so much harder to push back. I care, but I am tired.

You were arguing medicine and I was arguing politics... we were both right... I'm sorry for getting personal and your argument wa not feeble, it was just not on point to my specific remark and intention... I know you care and so do I... so we'll just leave it at we both give a shit!

Absolutely agree... when someone starts talking about it and comparing/contrasting things to it, there is always a high chance they miss the whole point as to why you should never do that... it still carries a great stigma and should be used in comparison when you can state it is NOT the same thing... only makes the thing more dangerous TO THE PERSON WHO HAS HIV!!! I will fly to wherever you are tomorrow (but you better hurry and invite me before Snowmageddon II gets here!) and stand on that soapbox with you about AIDS not being a stigma anymore...

Organize the recall. It's the only solution.

Perhaps they were both holding their breath.

I don't like Newsom flouting the rules, but it's not my criteria for who I vote for for Governor. I don't expect perfection, especially from a politician. I just want him to be progressive and effective.

We went through an entire recall election because Repubs are assholes and will use any excuse nowadays to attack any liberal. Also, Repubs have too much money floating around. They also cost California lots of money.

True, but not a reason to vote for a Repub for Governor instead. I don't expect purity from my politicians and that's generally what happens.

One rarely sees gentle, shy individuals running for Governor of California. I'll take Newsom over Schwarzenegger any day, week, month, year, or decade. I didn't vote for him because his personal life is pure (it isn't). A whole lot of powerful individuals, usually men, also play the field. But they can be excellent in elected jobs.

If take Newsome over any Republican, but thinking you're above the laws you yourself mandated is gross behavior.

Absolutely! He’s good as governor. But he needs to be smacked for this bit of careless privilege.
