He didn't explain much about why, but said he was "uncomfortable" continuing in that role, and that he had been shut out in recent days. (We like to think, because we are optimists, that MAYBE he quit because he was legit uncomfortable with the crazy shit we shall detail below, the FBI got to him and were like "DUDE, what the hell," and he was like "I know.")

Back story which many people might need: Up until a few years ago, Erdoğan and Gülen were best pals, working together against Turkey's military-secular Deep State (Turks invented the term) which had kept Islamists out of power for ages. Gülen sent his disciples into jobs in the Turkish civil service to work in favour of Erdoğan's AK Party. After the AK Party became the dominant force in Turkey, Erdoğan decided to cut the Gülenists out of their share of the spoils of victory, and became SHOCKED and APPALLED sir to find out that this Gülen cult had infiltrated the State! People say that last year's abortive coup in Turkey was organised by the Gülenists in revenge, and I don't find that unreasonable.
The essential thing is that Gülen is a religious conservative who just happens to have fallen out with the other religious conservative who now runs Turkey. Also, it bugs me when we call Erdoğan a dictator. He's an authoritarian asshole but he's not all-powerful yet and he could be defeated in an election - he's won elections fair and square because a majority of voters (even in the Kurdish areas) agree with his agenda. He's a more legitimate ruler than Trump.
Imagine if Pat Robertson's disciples had infiltrated the federal government to help get Trump elected, and then Trump decided to cut them loose and Pat Robertson had to go into exile for fear of his life. That's Gülen.
