Mmmmm, lovely evening we're having so I'm going back to bed. Meccalopolis awaits, and I said I'd bring ice cream. Good night, beloved Wonketteers. We love and appreciate you all and we bless us all with love, health, peace, and grace. Be kind, especially to yourself, and please, please stay safe. When we vote, we WIN!!

I'll bring in my filled-out ballot. She votes in person. :) :)

Well, fuck me running. Marina Hyde left the Guardian last month. She's going solo:

https://deadline.com/2026/10/marina-hyde-always-on-creator-venture-goalhanger-1237150790/

I'll have to check out her new...whatever it is. According to the linked article, it's "a regular written column, a YouTube show and original social content, and in 'over time,' will push into 'further audio, video and digital formats.'” Oooooh-kay.

Maybe I'll subscribe, if it's reasonable. The problem is, a lot of her stuff in the Guardian was very UK-specific, and no matter how much I love her wicked wit, about 98% of the UK material was over my head -- I had no idea who, or what, she was writing about. Not sure I want to pay a lot for that.

There's an ACL/Youtube concert video of Jesse Welles and band on Youtube right now. They really rock out and almost every song is a no holds barred punch in the nose to the Circus Peanut and his administration https://www.youtube.com/live/YbRPrZoCqqw?si=c3sgcq5hCUrOOt2h

OMG 'circus peanut.' (lol)^(n+1)

I think it was a really smart decision that Wonkette made to harden its defenses against malicious disinformation and cyberwarfare. Comments aren’t allowed here, so there’s nothing for Russia to invade. Threat alert system can detect a botnest, a honeypot, or an open can of clams.

Made tortilla soup tonight. Had some homemade chicken broth and some old dried up tortillas, and had all the other ingredients. Came out good-definitely a do-over.

Aquaman, Real Estate Investor.'s avatar

This is something I need to put on my list to get decent at.

Dear news and other sites that paywall everything:

Did you ever think of offering a genuine one-article payment option? Meaning, you pay by credit card for one article, and that's IT? None of this bullshit, I repeat BULLSHIT, about having to "register" for a "membership" and then cancel the "membership" after reading the article you wanted?

It might just increase your revenue.

Pope Scipio Newburyporticus's avatar

Transaction fees. You'd have to do it in bundles and get the news sites to buy in to some kind of token system.

Bitter Scribe's avatar

See, THIS is why we need a federal banking/money management system, maybe under the USPS.

nodak. where's the beef?'s avatar

Or, just spitballing here, having one or two ad spots, with tolerable bullshit, leveraging your traffic?

It's like none of the idiots understand how advertising really works.

I'd go to Reuters or AP if they had 2 or 3 adds /page.

I'd view my local news if they only had a couple of ads

But the bombardment of 50 ads/page?

Bye, Felicia.

Bitter Scribe's avatar

I go along with requests to turn off my ad blocker. If I do that and then they STILL slam me with a paywall, then they can REALLY go fuck themselves.

I also turn the ad blocker back on if a swarm of ads makes the page unreadable.

There was a time back when PayPal had just popularized the idea of microtransactions (their original focus) that a few sites tried it, but it didn't last.

Bitter Scribe's avatar

Are the credit-card companies smothering transactions like that with seller fees, or something?

gallbladder's avatar

Well here's the problem: your suggestion just makes too much sense.

Mr. Dorothea and I have been saying this for years. Just charge per article. THIS ISN'T HARD!

Bitter Scribe's avatar

Shit. YouTube doesn't have a new Seth Meyers segment, which means he's probably off this week.

My nephew and his wife are expecting their first child next week so tomorrow I'm going to make a variety of breakfast tacos and some casseroles that they can freeze and then reheat as needed and take them over to their house in Katy. His wife's mother is planning to stay with them for a week or two to help after the baby arrives but from what I've seen of her she's kinda useless and more likely be complaining about getting less sleep. She often criticizes unmarried, childfree women like me and I want to just remind her that I couldn't help them out as much if I had my own kids but my nephew's wife is very sweet and I don't want to stress her out unnecessarily.

This is same nephew that I play practical jokes on when he visits so I'll have to resist the urge to put a rubber snake in the container holding the tacos.

Well done.

Rubber roaches & spiders or GTFO

Tiffany in Houston's avatar

I wish I had some. I've only got rubber snakes and the fake doggie poop he left at my place last time to get revenge on me for all the surprise rubber snakes.

dave in texas's avatar

I have a handful of rubber roaches somewhere around here that were props in a show I was in. Most realistic things ever; folks close to the stage would gasp and eeewwww when they'd spill out of the box.

nodak. where's the beef?'s avatar

I've got some ideas on how to re deploy that, but it will need a few weeks before deployment...

Yay for yr nephew's fambly! Yay!

And in case you might wonder, many of us disparage it as much as many Americans might.

why surely you don't get any dustups with your relatives around the dinner table?

We do, but without the casualty rates.

Ali is calling Donald's racism the racism it is on the attack on Rep Omar

Yeaaahhh ... he also had Mehdi in, who never minces words to the point they took him off the air

and Jim Acosta (and we know what happened to him)

It was a nuanced conversation in a country that HAS all the racism but REFUSES to say so out loud.

I don’t recognize your handle, but maybe don’t disparage the segment if you haven't even seen it

The Moron and Lunatic in the White House has now declared China and Russia aren’t helping Iran, and that if they were, β€œwe would know about it very fast" and "it's at a very low level".

We do know. His own Defense Secretary told senators they are.

Trump's covering for Putin and Xi as they help Iran kill American service members.

So, I'm looking for a co-founder for the cell cancer cell therapy project. The core tech is FDA-approved for trials in melanoma, but we need to improve scale GMP manufacturing to get Pharma interested. Also pivot from melanoma to Triple-Neg. Breast. I've raised $ before, but trying to do all the tech and the business/investor tasks is too much. Need a retired or recently exited CEO OK with equity-only until we raise the Angel seed round.

I joined a co-founder matching board and man, you have to kiss a lot of warty amphibians before you find a handsome prince. The best one was:

"'AI Empath'", a cancer patient's best friend in times of need". I have no fucking words.
