Left unsaid from F$F brief but good synopsis is the reason we were so gung ho on the shah. Iran fell in line with OPEC during Yom Kippur War oil crisis of 1973 so Ian wasn't our buddy for oil. It was the strategic location Vs. the Soviet Union and the shah was an enthusiastic customer of the US military industrial complex. Most of all Iran was a counterbalance to the UAE (Iraq and then adversary Egypt) both solid Soviet satellites. No western powers could change those flows of history for better than they turned out. As demonstrated by Reagan and the Bushes we just made them worse.
