More on the proposed new ICE detention facility in my state. There's not much we can do to block it and it is going to put all the Hispanic service industry workers in the town and surrounding area in a perpetual state of anxiety.
"Another point of contention during the [shutdown] floor debate was a provision in the funding bill that will allow senators to sue the federal government if their phone records are obtained without them being notified. The provision, which is retroactive to 2022, appears to be tailored for eight Republican senators who last month found their phone records have been accessed as part of a Biden-era investigation into the attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters on Jan. 6, 2021.
If they successfully sue, each violation would be worth at least $500,000, according to the bill language. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of the senators whose phone records were accessed, said Wednesday that he will “definitely” sue when the legal avenue becomes available. “You think I’m going to settle this thing for a million dollars? No. I want to make it so painful, no one ever does this again,” Graham told reporters.
Several Democrats slammed the provision on the House floor. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York said it was “unconscionable” to vote in favor of the spending bill with that language tucked in. “How is this even on the floor? How can we vote to enrich ourselves by stealing from the American people?” she said.
Some House Republicans were caught off guard by the provision and said they disagreed with the provision. The concern was enough to get Johnson to announce that House Republicans plan to fast-track legislation to repeal the provision next week."

I like the idea of seizing Krasnov’s Manhattan properties and converting them into affordable housing. Of course, the buildings are notoriously trash and poorly maintained because he is incredibly cheap, so it might a lot of effort to get them up to code.
If you're cancelling subscriptions to national newspapers these days (all the kids are doing it), Bolts Magazine makes an excellent home for some of those freed-up dollars.
Though they're not being up front about it (of course), it's become very clear that ICE wants to bring a detention facility to our county (Lincoln County - Newport, Oregon, specifically) and citizens were less than thrilled.
In a town of about 10,000 people, and a county of 50,000, over 800 people showed up at Newport's City Council meeting last night to object to the plan. The article is (I think) overly long, but details the way in which Homeland Security's effort is operating behind the scenes in trying to find a location and set things up. Thank goodness our state and federal reps aren't MAGA, but I don't know how much pressure they can actually bring to bear on stopping the effort.
Our coastal communities are thick with mixed-status families; I can only imagine how it would devastate our local economy, not to mention the families themselves should ICE ramp up its efforts here. Terrifying times we're living in....

thanks for the pretty birb, martini!
I WANT that bird! I want him hanging out in my house, even though I know he's a wild animal and would hate it.
So o course I'm not going to do it, but wouldn't it be cool to have him hanging out?
Purdy boid! :D
Oh, so that's what a tailwind is!
They seem far more ornamental alive than taxidermically perched in Norman Bates' back office.
Whoa!!! That's an amazing birb 🐦
That pheasant is absolutely fabulous, most esteemed M.G. <3
I call fraud. I clicked cuz I thought this was going to be an Ivy League put down. It wasn’t. Just about some bird.
Little known fact: Martini Glambassador invented click-bait. Keep that on the downlow.
Hey, where’s our poim?
A pheasant way to begin the day!
Look at my fabulous tail feathers. LOOK AT 'EM!
Still, can’t compete with a wren.
In what subject, though? I hear pheasants just slay in the ballgown competition.
Pennyweight operatic fat lady.
What a glorious way to start the day. Thanks!
But is it a jerk? I’m worried that it might be some vain peacocking jerk.
I'm withholding judgment until parkeetist weighs in.
That is a magnificent tail to shake!
"Dirty Deeds. Don: Dirt Cheap."
You win the internet for the day!!!

Trump needs to have his assets frozen and used to pay back what he’s stolen from America

Yeah, there are no fire sprinklers in Trump Tower, for starters.
What???
Well fuck it, torch it!
Just collapse them and start afresh.

My family loves Newport and heard of that new development also. We think the idea is a rotten one.
