Bigotry is one of them.

Interestingly, one of the ballot measures (Prop C) out here in SF this election is one that would actually reform the recall process to reduce this sort of bullshit.

Prop H was the recall of Boudin, and I happily voted no, but it will be interesting to see where it lands. I know the polling doesn't look great, but there are A LOT of 'No on H' signs around town.

The California Leg actually banned private prisons in 2019 (no new contracts and any existing ones have to phase out by 2028), but the private prison companies sued because of course they did. It also bans private immigration detention facilities. From the LA Times: https://www.latimes.com/cal...

Private prisons should be illegal.

private prisons should be outlawed every damn where. I completely agree. still, incarceration is lucrative a lot of times in a more indirect way through the supply chain.

Thank you for this. The Boudin recall has been fueled largely by a single Republican donor who, true to Republican form, thinks elections are for little people and that anything goes when it comes to getting rid of politicians with whom one disagrees. In some ways, this is even worse than the voting restrictions Republicans are engineering around the country, because in this case, the people have already voted. There is no malfeasance, no criminal conduct, no egregious behavior, no mntal incapacity that might remotely warrant a recall.

And I cannot believe that so many of my "progressive" friends and neighbors in San Francisco appear to be blithely going along with this same kind of anti-democratic attack on voting that they virulently oppose when it happens in places like Georgia and Mississippi and Ohio.

I mean ... I think it's actually a good thing that we don't do Tucker Carlson "AMERICAN DYSTOPIA!"-style reviews of these states and gloat over the fact that people there are getting murdered at high rates or that their towns are dilapidated, not to mention the fact that such a tack wouldn't really resonate with a lot of our voters.

Lord knows I am not a "They go low, we go high" type. I'm more than happy to go low. I just prefer direct hits that don't accidentally hurt people who didn't do anything wrong. Remember that a lot of these places also have fucked up voting rights situations that make it difficult for people of color to vote and they are also the ones who most frequently bear the brunt of their state and local government's bad decisions.

Can you ID the "single Republican donor" for us? And what did/does he donate to?

Recall elections are the only way conservative/Republicans can win in CA. Low turnout gives them the opportunity to do what they can't normally.Fuck Ted Cruz.
