That would be "teacher" layoffs, there were at no time mass healthcare layoffs. In fact healthcare employment increased throughout the recession (unfortunately the BLS's graphs are not directly linkable, but if you go <a href="http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/iag\/tgs\/iag62.htm#workforce" target="_blank">here</a> and click the dinosaur on the line for "Employment, All Employees" you see the lack of a dip).

Teacher layoffs were caused by wingnut-<em>enacted</em> austerity measures - that President Obama sought directly to prevent or limit with the transfers to states in ARRA.
