Ta, Robyn. Our socialist Democratic mayor wants to make the buses free, which would be fucking awesome. For many scofflaws, they are already free. Buses were free during the pandemic, and commuters got used to that. I still paid my fare, because I had to transfer to a train at Union Square anyway. Yes, I could have ridden TO Union Square for free, but I didn't want our bus route to be downsized. Free buses should not have to wait for the next pandemic; I hope City Council supports this BUT the decision will be made in Albany, not NYC.
I worked in The Bronx. When the doors to the back of the bus opened to let passengers off, a huge crowd of people boarded without tapping an OMNY card. There's no personnel other than the driver on buses. I don't know about the other boroughs; I rarely went anywhere in Queens or Brooklyn (apart from taking clients by train to get their SNAP reauthorized), and haven't visited Staten Island in years.
Hardly any of the low-wage workers in Manhattan live in Manhattan; free buses could help. Elders like me pay half-fare. So do people with disabilities -- I know this because I helped my HIV positive clients in The Bronx apply for Fair Fares. When Congestion Pricing took effect, my beloved contemplated taking the bus and subway to work. It would have added over an hour to his commute to the school in Brooklyn where he taught. He also considered getting an e-bike; I vetoed that and he agreed it was a bad idea. I told him this: For another $3 a day, you can continue to drive to work; it's $9 on the EZ Pass vs. $6 to have your day ruined before it starts (my daily commute to and from The Bronx was usually just crowded, but sometimes it was nightmare fuel).
Up here at the pied-à-nuage is another story entirely. I have to learn to drive and get a license. We aren't in the suburbs; we're in the sticks. Sean Duffy is proudly ignorant of how *anything* works. We won't get on a plane until this maladministration is entirely gone.

They've been arrested, and the kids are in foster care (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/oct/06/california-couple-charged-child-abuse-surrogacy). They apparently had a nanny, but still, you cannot care for that many kids, most babies or toddlers, in your home. You just can't. Something is majorly wrong with these people. He can afford them, and care for them, but he's gone bonkers into this pronatalist shit, which slots into his very racist beliefs that white people aren't having enough kids.

I was struck immediately -- and have not yet read any further -- with the proper spelling of "buses" in the headline.
I once misspelled it in a MUD room description. People complained, but I refused to change it because "buses" is stupid anyway.
