I hear you. I feel like I swing back and forth between horrified and numb. Or, more accurately, that the numbness is a veneer covering over terror and anxiety. If I think about anything more than one foot in front of the other, I feel like I might just break down. And then I feel remarkably silly for feeling that way, because middle class white girl with a good job. MY life is fine - do I have the right to this anxiety? (which leads to swirls of existential questions that seem primarily grounded in empathy, an anxiety disorder, and belonging to a religious minority that has been shot at a lot lately.)
the whole point of the American military being in afghanistan today is so the taliban doesn't become the defacto government in the country again. I'm sure the taliban is happy to agree to not killing any other americans since there are a lot of people in Afghanistan to kill once the americans leave.
If Trump were an actual billionaire instead of just a grifty con man, he'd send a copy of his tax returns and bank statements to every household in America.
Am reading Susan Orleans' "The Library Book" and was reminded of how crappy the 60's were, with Watts, Viet Nam, America Love It Or Leave It and all........Her description of the national mood is a lot like now. Thinking about it, she's right. It felt just as awful then, especially if you were young and wondering what next?50 years on and here we are again.
I can pretty much relate to everything you just said. And I think we don't just have a right to the anxiety, but that it's an appropriate response. And if we are this anxious, with relative security, it puts in sharp relief what goes on for people in dire straits.
The other day I was in a little twitter chat about using snark and dark humor to get through these times, and whether it's ok, or trivializes the pain. There's been the occasional Attack of the Onion Ninjas, but I think something inside me went into a cocoon as the results started coming in, as I lay on my living room floor and kept wishing that it was a bad dream. Since then, I've been appalled, pissed, outraged, infuriated, heartbroken... but serious tears don't come. :-/
