Years and years ago, I had to submit to a health exam even though I was just an office droid. Part of it entailed a breast exam by the company's contracted doctor. I later found out from my female manager that this was not necessary and the doc was just a perv. Could we sue? No. It was just an honest pervy mistake... oops (not oops).
As long as a for-profit health system exists in the U.S., intrusion into every aspect of employees' lives will continue in the name of the bottom line.
Ta, Robyn. Now I wonder how negotiations between our Union and the network are going. All of us are at the low end of the pay scale for the jobs we're doing.
I worked with a company that did an extensive physical exam before being hired, but if there was an issue with something that could be fixed, they would let the applicant reapply if the problem could be resolved (like blood pressure meds or along that line). You would be horrified at the number of people who walk around with really high blood pressure and never know it because they've never been to a doctor.
This was a job working with large animals on a farm, so you need to have people who are pretty healthy. And the company offered health insurance and free annual health exams, so they were interested in keeping their employees healthy.
According to our data, Dollar General Corporation has a market capitalization of US$54b, and paid its CEO total annual compensation worth US$12m over the year to January 2020. Notably, that's an increase of 13% over the year before.
Imagine MrPug doing his best Dr. Evil impression (and it is a very good one, in his very humble opinion)...they settled for 1 million dollars. That'll teach 'em fo' sure!
You'd think a chain like Dollar General would lose more money paying for those medical examinations than they'd save from stopping the sick from working for them.
Dollar General hasn't made it to Canada yet. The dominant cheap stuff chain in Canada is the home grown Dollarama. It has over 1500 stores at the moment, and has plans to open hundreds more. Dollar Tree currently operates 227 stores in Canada.
I retired from the fed government 13 years ago with a pension from the CSRS system- IYKYK. I am on LinkedIn mainly for my son. Last year, I was offered a job via Linkedin as a clerk at Dollar General 65 miles from my home -I think the pay was $12.50 an hour.
“Parents know better than the government or the media how much work is too much for a teen,”
Like my parents had a shred of a clue about what I was doing. I worked 20-30 hrs a week through high school, including past 11 on week nights and past 1 on weekends.
As long as I didn't get in the way of the tv or cause the cops to come around, they were pretty much fine with not knowing what I was doing.
Giina?! GINA!?!? I tells ya, Marge, those CCP creeps have infiltrated all the way to Bessemer Alabama and now they're telling good Merican companies how to run they bidness, telling them whut can and cannot be asked in a job application and denying them good innocent fun like short-arms inspections. Must be so they can slip in some of them transisters on the sly.

Congratulations to the Raytheon workers! Even people working for somewhat evil war profiteers need workplace protections.
The genital exams were probably to check for hernia, but still- talk about burying the lede!

And now, I will forever think of this company as Dollar Genitals.

I'll bet anything the genital exams were on minors that some creep thought was "hot"
It is amazing how legibly the WSJ Opinion writers can write with pencils jammed up their noses.
Ridiculous paste eaters.
After going through bladder cancer my genitals have had so many examinations that if they were a meme they would be considered to have gone viral.
On reflection maybe the term 'viral' isn't the best word I could have used when talking about my junk.
