Because Sessions hate him. After watching everything that's happened since the election, the idea that Sessions had no choice but to recuse himself is obviously not true. He could have stayed involved and put his dick RIGHT up in there, and no one would have done a damn thing about it. Not one thing. That's not how it's supposed to go, but that's how it would have gone. He knows that by now, even if he didn't know it back then, So the only reason I can see that he isn't unrecusing himself is that he's resentful of all the shit Trump has been talking about him ever since. He hasn't caved because he HATES Trump. HATES him. He still cares more about his own job and his own reputation, and part of him hopes that Mueller succeeds, but not until he gets everything he's always wanted from this job.
You probably are correct. The other day I read an article that said the senior Senate Republicans got the word to Trump that they would not approve the appointment of anyone if Sessions was axed.
Since Roseanne was cancelled there is an opening in the TV schedule. If a taste for reboots has been developed, they might consider this show, with Sessions assuming the title role:

It has been reported that Session lied during sworn testimony, at least twice, about Russian contacts. The importance or content of those contacts is unknown.
It is easy to see that he does have something to hide concerning the Russians. But, I infer that whatever his transgressions, they are very small. If he was involved in substantial skulduggery, then he would probably do everything he could to derail the investigation.
As for Sessions knowing, deniably of course, of actual treasonous activities by others I cannot make up my mind. I have arguments covering multiple alternatives, all equally plausible. Just need more information to extrapolate further.
