I'm guessing this clown thinks the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan is the epitome of ballrooms. OK, it is gorgeous, and they do events there all the time. But the ballrooms are useless and notoriously difficult to do anything in, including loading in and out. They do have Service corridors, though narrow. They do have a loading dock and freight elevator up to ballroom level.
This thing is useless and dangerous. A perfect illustration of the times. Like Nero's Golden House. A thing that will never be completed or used, at enormous cost.
If they'd actually consulted with someone competent question one would have been:
"Ok, where on the White House property can we put the loading dock? You want a massive ballroom, we need to be able to pull up and unload a decent size truck without being a huge eyesore. You don't have space from that, we don't have space for an event space."
Well, it's a true fact that architects rarely consult the people who will actually use the spaces they design. Docks, service corridors, storage space, freight elevators etc. don't generate revenue and the public generally doesn't see them, so they're often back-burnered and pretty much afterthoughts.
But that's for shitty venues. Venues that know what they're doing will force the architects to account for those things.
I can't stand the Gaylord properties, though I work in them a lot. At the very least they do have adequate support infrastructure. Because they're smart enough to know that they can ram more business through their facilities if production can get in, up and out in a reasonable timeframe. They gouge for electrical connections, and if I told you how much they charge to use their internet you wouldn't believe me.
OK, I'll tell you. WiFi costs about $30 per day per person. So for a conference of about 1000 people over 3 days, by the time it's all said and done $100,000 more or less. For internet service that's already there. About 5 minutes of typing, for the technician to set up a custom SSID and password, and to apportion the bandwidth.
But anyhoo, this White House Ballroom won't be useable. It'll be a big, horribly loud, badly lit, dining hall. Where the food shows up cold and veeerrrrryyyy slowly without service corridors or "back of house" space at level.
