If you've heard of the Fermi Paradox (if life starts so easily, where are the aliens?), there's an idea that tries to explain why there aren't aliens all over the place. It's called the "Great Filter", and it postulates that there is something that happens that keeps life - once it starts - from getting to the point where an intelligent species spreads across the galaxy. The real question about the Great Filter is what side of it humanity is on.
Maybe we're on the wrong side, and heading hell-bent for the Filter.....
How do we know what ‘intelligence’ is? And how can we quantify it if we have nothing else to compare ours with, especially if we can’t/won’t even acknowledge the different types of intelligence in creatures that already share our space? Our inflated sense of self-importance is problem #1 when attempting to figure out the rest of existence.
The shelf life, I think, is a function of locality and time. A given life form has a limited immediate environment in which to develop and thrive... evolve. If it begins to out grow it’s environment’s capability to support it, the options are to stop growing or expand environments. If the animal possesses the ability to access and adapt to new environments, it will survive. If it can’t adapt, it fails to thrive. I think the universal function of existence of life is entropy. Things expand from their source, energy moves, things change. But the universe favors efficiency.
