Earlier this week I had the unpleasant realization that I have something in common with Donald Trump. I was at work, and I cracked a joke that I shouldn't have. I do this a lot, and every time, I tell myself: next time I'm going to hold my tongue. But then I see an opening to make a great (terrible) gag, and I go for it instinctively, like a hungry orca to an injured seal.
I agree with all of this, with the caveat he's still a horrible bully too.
Remember that first big debate with candidates of both parties, which seems like seven years ago? The one where Hillary was late returning to the podium because the ladies' loo was so far away from the stage? Trump riffed on that in an evil way. "She's still in the bathroom. You don't want to know what she's doing in there, it's disgusting. OH, it's disgusting!".
I have to admit, it was funny, in that he painted this picture for the audience to imagine, WHAT exactly Hillary was doing in that bathroom that was "disgusting"? It was the cheapest of cheap shots, but I sorta laughed, I admit. It was nasty and mean but also sort of funny, delivered with a comedian's snappy patter. I hate myself for giggling at such a display, but I did. Such a grade school comment, you can tell he's been putting people down and trying to humiliate others ever since he was a rotten rich kid.
I think as you mature, you can still appreciate juvenile or potty comedy. You just know there's a time and place for it. And the floor of a presidential debate it not the right time or place.
Or of the reality TV star reality. The thing about THAT kind of clown is that they rely on editors to make them better or worse than what they really are. Whichever the script calls for.
That's the thing about Presidential elections: no edits, no script.
The class clown isn't malicious, spiteful, and hungry for blood. Those who know Trump going back a ways remember how he parlayed false rape accusations against 5 black teenagers (the youngest 14) into a huge personal career boost. His grandstanding against them catapulted him from real-estate mogul to entertainment personality. They were sent to hard time in state prison for 10 years and were only released when the real rapist was finally identified.
Trump isn't the class clown. He is a monumental ravenous sociopath who feeds on popularity. So he will garner popularity any way that works, no matter how fleeting or short-term. Including clownish jokes.
Ah yes I've always heard it was "a bad punchline." But it can also be said the other way. Until I thought about it, though, I didn't see how that also implies a certain desperation. So thank you.
Only theoretically, darling. In the workplace, with people screaming, and the situation slipping out of control.... thoughtful and considerate often don't cut it. Gestures, making faces, and saying funny lines are all that save the day.
I have experience dealing with several narcissists too. malignant narcissists ate the worst.
hates everybody & everything!70 yo meanie.
He'll just ask them to pay to make the problem go away, then bomb them with a nuke.
See? Easy.
Allow me to add pre-full loony Jim Carrey and pre-Love Guru Mike Myers to that list.

Trump is a gold-plated, cubic-zirconia-encrusted version of Andrew Dice Clay.
I'm not rooting for alcoholism but which brother has done the most damage to this country?

Jason P. Steed has an interesting take on 'just joking', it's function in humor, and how it normalizes and ostracizes. http://www.vox.com/2016/8/9...
Never knew. I've always found that being thoughtful and considerate is a way to make friends that matter.
