Arthur Wellesley was a political dinosaur all right, and I wish he'd never become Prime Minister. His opposition to reforming the voting system in Great Britain (rotten boroughs were very well named) was disgusting. At least he didn't oppose emancipation for Roman Catholics.But I can't help having a soft spot for the man who stopped Napoleon's forces in the Peninsula, famously said to a blackmail attempt by a woman who was writing a book about her highly placed lovers, including him, "Publish and be damned!" and described Queen Victoria's uncles as being the damnedest set of millstones that ever hung around the neck of any government. Which they pretty much were.And I regard Bonaparte as one of history's villains. Not because he made war on England and Prussia, but because of what he did to France. He had military genius and understood gunnery, but his arrogance led him to make bad mistakes. Invading Russia was bloody well insane and destroyed the Grand Armee.
