I've been wondering where she was. Isn't it time for her 20,000-mile check-up?

I want him to be parachuted into Ecuador with nothing but his ugly-ass suit and made to return to the states on foot, so he can tell us what kind of a "picnic" it is

"Don't be ridiculous. These are showers to refresh you from your long train ride. We're only shaving all your body hair to protect you from lice. That tattoo? It's so you can find your children if you get separated from them. Sheesh, you people are so suspicious of our good intentions to let you enjoy a few weeks in a fun time camp ground."

I think it's deeper than just turn out. With Republicans, their politics is a direct extension of their faith, their religion, their fear and their hate. They are damned well voting, 'cause it's the core of their righteous core beliefs. Not every (R) of course, but they are more likely to hear from their preacher, employer, Fox News, family member or friend that they HAVE to vote because we can't let these [negative identification here] ruin our country and harm our families.

With Democrats, yes many of us believe strongly in our policy positions, and we are righteous about many of our moral beliefs, but I think it's some middle number of us, say 50% for the sake of argument. The other 50% are busy with daily life, with family, with issues and life struggles. They don't see how political identification is a core factor to improving their life. They might come out if they really like the candidate, or if they are personally touched by the key issue. But otherwise, voting today is not at the top of the To-Do list. And we're less likely to reach out and try to convince them to vote, 'cause we tend to respect a person's personal choice.

In other words, I have no idea how to create a strong and constant belief in voting in every election. I do and always have, but when I was first able to vote, the Republicans were killing my friends (and trying to kill me) and lawfully forcing us to become murderers in Vietnam. It lit a fire under me that still burns, but it was a simple binary choice.

Today, my daughter just told me she's scared and depressed because her job sucks, she can't figure out how to move to a different area of employment and she can't afford to go to grad school, she can't afford a house or to start a family, and what's the point of it all when we're all going to die in 30 years anyway? That's a genuine existential crisis and some hard shit to overcome; to have the passion to vote when you no longer believe that anyone in power is going to do anything about any of those issues no matter what you vote.
