He was already projected as a mid-round pick (right now he's just an edge rusher who needs to develop a better inside move to be an every-down defender) before:
a) He played poorly at the Senior Bowl b) He had one of the worst performances at the NFL Combine c) His pro day was limited by a hamstring injury that prevented him from performing a lot of the LB drills scouts were looking at.
As for the award, Bill Barnwell at ESPN pointed out all of the above plus the fact that C.J. Mosely (who shared the SEC DPOY with Michael Sam) was drafted #17. And the player that was named an AP All-American at Defensive End along with Sam, Jackson Jeffcoat (co-Big 12 DPOY) got drafted by...no one despite having an outstanding year.
I do not care about the foozball draft or whatever it is but watching Michael Sam's reaction made me feel happy about it, whatever it is.
