I fucking HATE the term "entitlements"- why are Dems so bad at countering this shit linguistically? Entitlements has a very clear connotation of something being unearned when in fact these are "EARNED BENEFITS"- you pay into them your whole fucking working career. I've given a crap ton of my paycheck to Medicare and SS in order to GET IT when I am of age. And yet there are all these mouth breathing morons who think entitlements are something the government just hands out, mostly to brown people, and thus, yeah, take it away. Dems need to be hammering home- hey morons, check your paychecks- you're paying into this! Don't let the GOP eat your EARNED BENEFITS.

y'all don't have mandatory superannuation as well as social security?

In Rethuglikkklan speak "MAGA" translates into American political English as: "We will destroy Social Security and Medicare". Just like "Pro-Life" really meant "we will abolish abortions" and look what happened. The Repturds keep their promises folks.

It might help if billionaires and fake billionaire displaying clear evidence of gaudy excessive displays of wealth were paying more than $750 a year or less in federal income tax. And if the public would stop saying "but it's legal" and instead started saying "why is it legal", in addition to having the IRS actually audit their tax returns and confirm if they are legal. Then put all the deductions, credits, and loopholes that only benefit the top 5% of filers, especially the top 1%, on the chopping block unless it can be shown it actually benefits the overall economy, not just the bank accounts of the wealthiest people. If you do that for wealthy people and corporations you wouldn't really need to set a minimum tax for people making a million dollars or more a year or for multi million dollar corporations.

So instead of the GOP whining Biden is going to raise your taxes Democrats can say no, we are ending unfair tax loopholes. Then point out some of the complex tax dodges and loopholes with indecipherable titles that most people would look at and say " wtf is that and why is it a deduction or tax exemption."

Thank you for the "Why is it legal?" rationale!!!!

A LOT of stuff needs to be considered when we see the pillage by the uncool Daddy Warbucks crowd.

> And in terms of, also, the theft of entitlements — tremendous bad management of entitlements — there’s tremendous amounts of things and numbers of things you can do.

Yeah, cutting government waste is as evergreen as infrastructure week. Waste is endemic to any human endeavor that involves more than zero people and has a budget of more than ten American pennies. It's just how we work. Slack is required.

And there's nothing to bump up government spending better than attacking waste! Instead of having a 3% slack factor, you can have 100 government employees watching over every step of the process. It won't decrease the 3% but it will add another 4% on top of it to monitor the 3%. Winning!

Someone will always come up with a way to cheat in anything they can make a buck off of. More effort at enforcement would help more than adding income or work requirements crust need constant monitoring and often cuts people qualified for benefits because of red tape. While even private insurance companies are subject to being scammed you seldom hear about it. But a $50 million Medicare scam makes news.

While the Medicare/Medicaid programs pay out billions of dollars, it might be nice to hire a few more people to at least have a quick look at any single vendor getting more than $10 million a year to see if it is legitimate. The cost if doing that would be much less than each state making everyone fill out work and asset forms every year. Plus the very real threat of being caught and put in prison would make it a more risky scam. Sort of like putting the leaders of 1/6 in prison may make anyone thinking of trying it again back off. But so far, except for stupid foot soldier cultists, none of the leadership seems to be held accountable.

As mentioned, undocumented migrants pay in and get nothing, but even the documented immigrants are by and large younger and healthier and are actually bolstering the system, not weakening it.

Through a lot of luck and some work, Social Security and Medicare are the only direct benefits I have ever received from the government, or likely ever will. (Of course I reap the indirect rewards of living in a civil society, having roads to drive on, etc.)

And of course the bastards are coming for that.

It's like they never want ANYONE to get help for ANYTHING, unless it's avoiding taxes.

One more reason to give OHJB a trifecta in the fall. Based on some of the non-comments, there are folks taking SS earlier than planned because of the rethuglican threats to it. We are probably not the only ones thinking that way. A run on the bank, if you will. And the last of the Baby Boomers is eligible for SS in two years. Time to raise the cap, and he can't do that without Congress.

I'm a late boomer - full retirement will be age 67 for me - 4 years hence.

I'm a late boomer too, a bit older than you. I took SS the minute I was eligible. I have been expecting them to do away with it my whole life. At least since I was in that temporary classroom in the fifth grade. The glut of boomers moving through have upset ever system as they reached that stage. Keep your eye on the coming scarcity of assisted living and home health care. And after that wave passes there will be scads of furniture and housewares on the resale market.

Oh I know on the assisted living. I'm 63 - my mother is 83 in her own home in another state - her health issues are on the rise - I might have to start being there more often. I am an RN that works in hospital - so I see this daily with other people.

Well, he's right about there being a lot "waste" in the Social Security Administration. I don't know if you've ever heard about this, but apparently they just give "money" to old people, who aren't even working, those deadbeats. A thousand dollars and more! And they do this *every month.*

That's not gonna MAGA.
