Just something that irks me a little: why do we use the Soviet iconography in cartoons depicting the Putin thread? Russia doesn't even pretend to be socialist any more.

Well, Putin hates gays, loves billionaires and has embraced the Orthodox Church - he's the opposite of a communist. What's the difference between his politics and, say, that of Ted Cruz?

... it was a problem taking sides with an uprising against a dictator? This is the kind of realpolitik bullshit which leads to the US destabilising elected governments who are too commie and hugging dictators who are friendly. It's bullshit. Assad needs hanging from a lamppost. And the people who think the Arab Spring was a CIA operation need their heads read.

No. Assad instigated it when he shot down peaceful protestors in 2011. The "Arab Spring = CIA operation" myth is one spread by nutcases on both left and right. It shows contempt for the idea that the browns could possibly do anything without the white powers holding their hands.

Yes, it was a problem.

It's all well and good to say we should go in and support regime change for an odious dictator, but there are a thousand way we can make things worse by doing so. We could prolong the war, we could be backing a side that would make things worse, we could further destabilize the country empowering radical terrorist elements, we could be drawn into a larger war with other states who are backing other sides, the weapons and money we pour into our 'side' could end up being funneled to bad elements or pointed right back at us.
