Fauci said in one of his recent interviews that there was a tiny, grudging level of respect that the Orange one had for him as a fellow New Yorker, and as such, it's the only reason he was ever allowed to be the "no man" in the room. Instead, the Shitgibbon would cajole him into trying to spin the information more positively.

It's not as much as writing history, but looking at plausible alternative timelines. Looking at these alternative timelines will help to inform us on how to learn from possible mistakes that might have been made in those alternative timelines. Doing this mental exercise will help us make the right decisions in this current timeline.

This has been explained before: Masks - he didn't like covering his face because he believes he is very handsome. Shelter in place - his hotel, golf and other businesses depend on people traveling and venturing out. Science had no hope of competing with his narcissism and pecuniary interests.
