"The Feud" is the best book about those folks. Kevin Costner turned it into the three-part History Channel mini-series with Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Tom Berenger, and Mare Winningham. One of the better things the History Channel has done.

The Hatfields and McCoys were ferocious folks and their feud got a lot of press from across the nation, but to portray them as simple-minded hillbillies is inaccurate: they were successful farmers and timberland owners. The coal companies moving into the region exploited the feud and other feuds to keep the citizenry divided and pretty much in a state of indenture to the coal companies.

The Matewan County Wars of the early 1920s between the UMW and the coal owners came from that violence. The Matewan Sheriff sided with the miners against the owners' hired thugs, the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, and paid for doing so with his life.

The Sheriff was Sid Hatfield. With a capital "H."

You know the joke, right? That Maryland should cede its three westernmost counties to West Virginia and raise the IQs of both states?

Upvoted for knowing your history. My friends in the late, great Granny's 12 Gauge had a song called ''Sid Hatfield,'' apparently available here.

Have they mentioned that Porterfield is blind BECAUSE he was drunk, acted like a jerk and incited a fight at a bar, years ago, and was badly beaten up?

Depending on your route, I can make recommendations. But right off, there's this good one near Beckley, close to some major through routes.

I lived in W.Va. for a year and a half. Saw more guns pulled than several years in Detroit and Cleveland. Shoot out on the main street, etc.
