Elizabeth Smart Politely And In Nice Mormon Girl Way Tells Abstinence Crowd To Bite Her

Hey, you know what's really stupid? Telling kids they can prevent pregnancy and disease by just not having sexytime until they spend tens of thousands of dollars on a wedding with dried-out chicken and tacky pink bridesmaid dresses because that's what God wants. You knowwhyit's stupid? First, see Bristol Palin. (B) Kids will end up more pregnant and more diseased because they will do sexytime anyway but without protection. And three, SEE BRISTOL PALIN.

Oh, and here is another reason why abstinence-only education is stupid. Because teaching girls to feel bad about themselves is a not nice thing to do. And it is especially not nice to do that to girls who did not have the option of abstaining because they were, say, kidnapped and held hostage and raped. Like Elizabeth Smart, the nice Mormon girl from Utah what got abducted and held hostage and raped when she was 14. She is all growed up now and has some things to say about the "just say no" lessons she was taught as a lass:

Smart said she grew up in a Mormon family and was taught through abstinence-only education that a person whose virginity was lost before marriage was considered worthless. She spoke to the crowd about a school teacher who urged students against premarital sex and compared women who had sex before their wedding nights to chewing gum.

“I thought, “Oh my gosh, I’m that chewed up piece of gum, nobody re-chews a piece of gum. You throw it away.’ And that’s how easy it is to feel like you no longer have worth, you no longer have value. Why would it even be worth screaming out? Why would it even make a difference if you are rescued? Your life still has no value.”

Well, now we are Sad. You are not a chewed up piece of gum, Elizabeth Smart! You are a lovely, Smart young lady, and you are pretty and you are kind and all those other awesome The Help things. Here, let us help you respond to the Abstinence people who made you feel worthless:
