Erick Erickson is very upset that the media is acting like it was gay people who were targeted at the Pulse gay nightclub, just because a guy who hated gay people went there and shot 50 gay people to death and 50 more gay people to not-death.
Doesn't that beat all? When Dylan Roof shot and killed nine at the Emanuel African Methodist Church, it wasn't a hate crime or racism. Now that 50 have been shot and killed at a gay night club, it isn't a hate crime against the LGBTQ community. When 12 movie-goers were killed at the Aurora theater, it wasn't an hate crime against Batman or DC Comics (too soon?).
The effect, though, is to blunt any deep thought about the issue, racism or homophobia, and by labeling it terrorism, we do the same. Terrorism becomes an illusory explanation: oh it was terrorism, and we stop thinking. If it is all Americans, then we don't think about the societal hatreds or systemic discrimination.
