Not even right-wing Conservatives up here suggest dismantling our health care system. They know that they&#039;d get voted out of office next time round.

However, she will need to get a seat for herself; it is fundamental to the Westminster tradition that the leader of the government be an elected representative who can answer questions in the legislature, and who can be voted out of office if the people don&#039;t like what she does (she is responsible to them, therefore Responsible Government). So now some happy newly-elected Liberal MLA in a really safe seat gets to resign and let her run in a special by-election so that she can once again be a member of the legislative assembly. That would really suck.
It was a federal Liberal government in 1965 (Pearson) that introduced Medicare. It was a Liberal (Trudeau) who said that the state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation. They liberalized the divorce laws, outlawed capital punishment, and made multiculturalism official policy. Oh, and introduced a long-gun registry in the 1990&#039;s which the Tory government just gleefully threw out.
